The point of an SSD is to make your OS and applications launch faster. You've installed your OS on there which is fine but by installing your applications on your HDD you've negated most of the benefit.

Applications like chrome/microsoft office/spotify etc should be on your SSD and anything larger like games should be on a hard drive (unless you have space for them on an SSD).

That's what you are supposed to do.

As an absolutely terrible comparison, you ride in the front of a moving truck in the smaller but more comfortable space, all your shit goes in that huge space in the back. Maybe you fish out a book or game or something to use and bring it up front occasionally.

HeaderBigTruck.png

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Its all good if Windows launches fast, but you also want your browser and other applications to open quickly too

I don't really use a lot of software. I code every once in a while and I play games when I have the time. Most of the time I'm using firefox, which is on my ssd as well as chrome.

I have 2 extra 500 gb hard drives to install games on, since it means less waiting around, also have adobe suite on there

If you dont use many applications then it wont really effect you, so there is no real benefit or loss

what if firefox launched in just 3-4 seconds on a normal 7200rpm hdd? Including OS boot under 15 sec and shutdowns around 5-10 sec.

Then there is no benefit is there haha, I notice on my set up, but then everyones PC is different, personally I am switching to 100% SSD inside my PC only my server will have mechanical drives

It actually takes me 12-13 seconds to get to the login menu with my ssd. I wonder if I don't have everything set up correctly.

I dunno. I have ultra-fast boot selected in my bios. And in the Magician software I have it set for maximum performance.

Hey there Skaz,

The SSD's speeds and access times do cause your system to be much more responsive and snappier. It's better performance can improve the performance of some applications and types of usage, but it has little to none effect over others. Gaming generally relies on the storage's performance only for the loading times and FPS and graphics stay completely unaffected. It is very common for people to use a SSD for the OS (for much faster boot times and improved overall responsiveness of the system) and the most demanding applications (editing, rendering, computing ,etc.) and software, and leave everything else on the regular HDD (games, less demanding and less used software as well as massive media like movies, music and photos).
I'd say you are doing a pretty sensible thing. :)

~snip~

Such programs should load faster initially but after that the performance should be more or less the same. Scanning applications such as anti-malware and anti-virus programs should work significantly faster when scanning the SSD. due to its faster access times and transfer speeds, but working on other drives should be normal.
