Futureproof of gtx 970 vs r9 390

ELECTRX

Well, good news is, with 380X coming and R9 380 already taking a dump on the 960, I wouldn't be surprised if 960 users got "downgraded" to 950 Ti status and a 960 Ti becoming the new 960 - Nvidia don't care bout PR - they'd do it.

Yeah. The only way to put nVidrosoft in their place right now is for AMD to do the impossible.

Let me link you to a post I made in another forum since I'm too lazy to type it all out again: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/amd-where-art-thou.781914/page-14#post-10116765

I don't want nVidia dead. Far from it. I want both companies to be making good cards. Right now, nVidrosoft is being the most anti-consumer company I could conceive of. The only way to get them out of that state is in that post I linked =D

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Anti-consumer is putting it lightly :D

I had an awesome logo that fit here but it's been "removed" from the OG sauce. It read

Nvidia: The way consumers are played - pretty accurate as of now.

I say wait till pascal comes out to make a decision. Who knows what will happen then or how powerful their next 300-400 buck gpu will be.

That's a year of waiting - Pascal is due Q3 2016 earliest.

And that'll only be GP104 considering current trends. GP100 (980Ti/TitanX replacements) will likely not be until 2017.

Did you actually read the whole thing? xD

This is 8GB of system memory (RAM) being utilized, not VRAM.

VRAM usage is 595mb on GPU#1 and 0mb on GPU#2

the nvidia card has much better DX11 drivers and consume less energy and will run cooler and overclock better and should have a longer lifespan, nvidia also have many newer technologies that are supported by maxwell, AMD has none of that...but the AMD card is slightly faster and has more memory.

it's your choice! Both are good and should last you a while especialy if you're willing to tweak down some settings down the road as the games evolve.

You don't know how to read the afterburner performance charts if you think you're using 8GB of VRAM.

You're using 8GB of system memory, standard RAM installed on your motherboard. Your actual GPU is at 600MB of use.

But i Have 16GB of Installed ram

Id like to see how pascal does with dx12. I believe maxwell just supports dx12 while pascal is made to use it? Also my titan black SC plays all my games so I'm good for now I can wait.

Maxwell can't do compute properly as it's cut down to the extreme. Pascal will bring back compute and with it, power draw will increase by quite a bit as well as heat output. Yay, Thermi V2!

Guess both amd and nvidia will be heaters then but well have to see what magic these two companies pull with their next cards! There might be gpu magic everwhere! *sparkle sparkle* magic! In all seriousness well have to wait and see what the power usage and compute will be like. I like how they decreased power draw and increased gaming performance.

Yep, in DX11 it was indeed impressive but when it comes to DX12 where compute gives you 40% more fps you kinda want the heat back :D

Maybe they come up with a way to decrease heat and increase compute? Anything is possible. I will be waiting in the shadows to throw 400-500 bucks at amazon for a new gpu depending on what happens. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

Same for GP106 and GP108

Nah, GP106/7/8 might come out in a small form at the same time. GM204 came out but GM107 was already out (750Ti, 860M/850M/etc).

GK104 and GK106 came out at the same time too; 680/670/660Ti/660/650Ti were launch or near-launch cards as far as I remember.

I'm not expecting GP100 though. The ONLY way GP100 comes out fast is if Arctic Islands rips GP104 to shreds at a good price point. Maybe then we'll have SOME semblance of a good line from nVidrosoft, and maybe they'll actually fix their drivers.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Actually, @D2ultima did some testing and according to his results memory usage is only based on bandwidth and games rather than the core's power - I can also confirm this via TitanFall where I was getting 60 fps @ 60% GPU usage and using all 3GB of VRAM - it even crashed cause it ran out of memory :D

Lets say it that way then. The R9 390 doesnt have the potential to use all of its VRAM in a game. PROOF - > Witcher 3 --> in 4k Ultra settings the 970 beats it

what i gather from you is that the card can use all of its VRAM and still deliver great performance. ITS THE GOD AMONG CARDS. EVEN the TITAN X gets the same performance in Skyrim with that much usage.. strange.. And strange in my own testing decreasing VRAM usage sudenly increases my FPS. And i was kind of talking of games that want both Speed and VRAM - like the new games. And since you know more than me... how come as i staded the 970 gets the same FPS on the same settings in 4k while, as you know 390 has 512 bit vs the 970's 256 bit and more than double the VRAM

The 970 has a breaking point at 3.5GB of VRAM and is partly bandwidth-starved in case you've been living under a rock for the past few months...

#edited before you posted.

In my signature you would see that i have the 970. I know the card better than you do my boy.. you dont need to explain to me what it has and what it doesnt. in case if you were living under a rock for the past few months... And i think you kind of prove my point. 2 times wors in specs than the 390 and still same performance. Even linus said that watching which card has the dominant specs alone doesn't mean it will perform better. What I meant by my first comment a long time ago (преди да започнеш да се правиш на интересен) is the following: It doesn't matter that the 390 has double the specs over the 970, you cant trust it to deliver double the performance. So having the whoping 8 gigs of VRAM wont help you in triple A titles. This is proven by any 390 vs 970 testing video ever made.

GTX 880M and GTX 980M have 256-bit memory buses and 8GB of vRAM and have used over 6GB in Shadows of Mordor without issue.

Also, to your statement about lowering vRAM usage = more FPS... you need to understand that many games blend "quality" with "resolution" of things like textures and shadowmaps. If you increase QUALITY and at the same time it increases resolution, then you'll notice a drop in FPS and an increase in vRAM.

This is why Titanfall is such a fantastic example. It separates texture resolution from other settings, so it can be tested in that way.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
