I'm buying a new GFX card...

PCHelp2015

So after seeking help, it's came to my conclusion that the: R9 380 is better than the GTX 960.

Now, my friend is saying that the R9 380 isn't worth it, and I should just buy the R9 290.

Is he right?

290, if found for a good price, is way better than a 380.

Well, Yes and No.

If you can find a good Sapphire R9 290, than get it.

But if you can't or have to go with another brand, don't

Would you say, I'm better of just getting the 380 then? Is there anything I can get better for my money? and what is the best brand.

The R9 290 is significantly better than the 380, just get a version with a good cooling solution

The sapphire 290 is massive and does what is was made for with excellence. I have built pcs with a xfx 290 and a sapphire 290x and both customers are happy.

there are aftermarketcoolers you can slap on that thing too.

Is the R9 290 cheaper in price?

Also: I'm guessing I'd have to buy a new PSU (currently have 500w) - and what do you mena by 'cooling solution' what else would I have to buy.

Plus with the 290, you can overclock it ab bit and reach the performance of a 290x.

It is only worth it if you buy used as new 290 are still expensive. Non reference design will be best(something with 3 fans)

WHY IS THIS SO COMPLICATED. Jesus. It seems the 380 is so much easier to buy despite it having a worse performance. Do you think an idiot like me should just buy an MSI 380 4gb and pay a shop £20 to fit it for me lol.

buy 4G 380 - sure, why not?

pay someone to put it in - waste of cash.

Yeah, but... As you can probably tell by the way I'm asking all these questions which are probably 'idiotic', I have no clue about hardware and don't feel like putting it in myself - have no experience, and will probably break it :P.

Use DDU to remove drivers, take out old card, put in new card, install drivers.

Just look for Sapphire version of the R9 290 with more than 1 fan, that is what I meant by cooling solution.

If the R9 290 is  more expensive it's still worth it to get it over the 380, it's actually very close to a r9 390 in performance
