R9 290X vs GTX 970

Rienks

Basically which one is better at raw performance. I know that I shouldn't compare GPUs between brands but I really want to know. Uses: 1080P Gaming (144hz Monitor) and maybe some F@H when I'm asleep also some video editing and rendering.

290x vs 970? 970.

Consider the 390x tho.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

i7 9700K (5.2Ghz @1.2V); MSI Z390 Gaming Edge AC; Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB 3200 CAS 16; H100i RGB Platinum; Samsung 970 Evo 1TB; Samsung 850 Evo 500GB; WD Black 3 TB; Phanteks 350x; Corsair RM19750w.

Laptop: Dell XPS 15 4K 9750H GTX 1650 16GB Ram 256GB SSD

If you specify that what you care about is raw performance, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with comparing GPUs between brands.  In fact, you should to make sure you get the best product.

Just don't start a thread of "which is better, AMD or nvidia" - that would be bad :)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

390X LOL

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

How to setup MSI Afterburner OSD | How to make your AMD Radeon GPU more efficient with Radeon Chill | (Probably) Why LMG Merch shipping to the EU is expensive

Oneplus 6 (Early 2023 to present) | HP Envy 15" x360 R7 5700U (Mid 2021 to present) | Steam Deck (Late 2022 to present)

Mid 2023 AlTech Desktop Refresh - AMD R7 5800X (Mid 2023), XFX Radeon RX 6700XT MBA (Mid 2021), MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon (Early 2018), 32GB DDR4-3200 (16GB x2) (Mid 2022

Noctua NH-D15 (Early 2021), Corsair MP510 1.92TB NVMe SSD (Mid 2020), beQuiet Pure Wings 2 140mm x2 & 120mm x1 (Mid 2023),

At this point everything is basically a draw, sure the 290X has less FPS but it's also cheaper when you have the FPS/Price ratio...

It's the point where you want AMD card with similar Nvidia features with fewer FPS but at a cheaper price or just a more expensive card that has better fps and features.

290x.

But you need to know which GPU tech your video editing software takes advantage of.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

After looking around at a lot of benchmarks, it looks like the 970 and 290x are actually very well matched, trading winners in many games, and even synthetic benchmarks.  Which one appears to have more raw power is actually dependent on which games and programs you are running, and it would be impossible in my opinion to call a clear winner across the board.

290X actually has 4GB of VRAM, 970 has 3.5GB.

It's a problem in at least 6 games that use more than 4GB of VRAM at 1080p

Ones I can remember:

Skyrim

Shadow for Mordor

GTA V

I'm checking out the 980

980 is a good option - but for 100$ cheaper you can get a 390X that is only 4% slower.
