Hey i just ordered a 4tb hdd for my current system and was wondering do i have to set it up differently than a 1tb drive since its a larger capacity? Or do i go about it the same way

split it into 2 partitions at min...having 1x4tb partition is unwise

you need to format it as a GPT partition in windows disk management

if you want the 4TB it needs to be GPT

if you do nbr it either gets divided into multiple partitions or it just shows up as one 2.1tb partition with the rest unusable, not sure which

Why would it be?  Partitions are only in software, and physically they are not separate so if the drive fails, everything fails regardless.

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

When there is no danger of failure there is no pleasure in success.

So I won't be able to just make it one partition?I would rather have one partition then 2 to be hones. because I wouldn't have to separate everything then like have a completely differentfile location for everything I want to install on that drive so let's say I want to install a game I would have to go into disk f or disk X instead of just choosing disk F right?

Throw it at your case, there are magnets inside it, so it will stick to the case. Then windows will say 'hey you wanna set this new drive up?' you click yes and your done.

Is it your primary drive? if not then no, ignore him and just use the one partition if that floats your boat. If it is your primary drive, he is recommending that you only have windows and applications installed on the C:\ and all user profiles and data on the second partition, so if you need to re-install windows you can easily keep all your data and user profile. but even then, it's a 4tb drive and if your re-installing windows often enough for this to matter, then you are doing it wrong, so do whatever floats your boat.

Lmao if it were only that easy. but yeah this is just a storage drive the operating system isn't on it

you don't wanna use just one partition for such a big hdd

partitions can get corrupted..atleast with 2 partitions you have the option of backing stuff up from recovery to the second partition

platters can also become damaged causing problems on 1 partition but not the other

anything over 1tb..I usually split into a min of 2...on a 4 tb..I would probably personally do 4 partitions

for MBR i'd say you where correct, GPT not so much, also it is the Partition table that gets corrupted. GPT has redundant Tables spread throughout the drive to resolve this.
