Guys am considering getting rid of my SLI 970's. Should i?

trainergames

When i build my rig early this year i was only going to be using 1080p,and was told by many people that at that RES the VRAM problem on the 970's would not show up,and that i could max games and be fine.

Well it turned to be wrong at least 6 of my games(if not more) go over 3.5gb while maxed out,the ones i can think of off the top of my head is GTA 5,and Far Cry 3.

Well since i was considering selling it,but mostly would rather trade it,i posted them on craigslist for sale or trade, saying i would rather trade for a different GPU setup.

Ok my 970's are $350(on newegg brand new) i posted it for $550 or trade.

I got a message today from a guy saying he know i wanted gpu's,but asked if i would consider a phone for trade. I asked what it was,he told me it is a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 32GB White Unlocked,i looked on amazon, and the sell new for $725,i wasn thinking of saying yes,but then turning around and selling it. I have already asked for the IMEI and checked it online, and will look when i get there to make sure the one he texted matched the phone.

Should i accept? Or Not?

I also have an iPhone 6 that i got from a friend for helping him move after he lost his place, after he lost his job.

I was thinking accepting the trade, then selling both phones and using the money from both the get a much better GPU setup.

What do you guys think?

If it helps my current monitor setup is 1x 1920x1200,2x 1920x1080,3x 1280x1024, 3 running off the 970,the other 3 off the onboard.

Are you trying to run games on all 6 monitors?  That's probably why.  I would never accept that deal.  You'd be running without a GPU if you did.

I am not trying to run game across all screens, my main screen i currently game on is the 1920x1200, all other screens are extended displays, and yes i do use up all the space lol.

Also i have spare GPU's,they are just not great lol,but it would only be until i sell the phones, the spares are a gtx 460 SE 1GB and a 7750 1GB, i will be ok just playing minecraft until i sell the phones and get better GPU's.

Are you running the latest Nvidia drivers, and did you install the drivers manually, or did Windows install them? I don't think the Phone is a great idea as people get their phones cheap on contract.

3.5 GB on Far Cry 3? How did you ever manage that? I think I use half that amount of vram playing maxed out on 1440p DSR. And do you have the Advanced Graphics settings turned up in GTA V? Those will rape a Titan X, much less 970s.

i'm not sure,it might have been when testing DSR,but i do know, that when i tested it just a little bit ago,i got 2.2-2.5gb at 1200p with no DSR,as for GTA 5 i had none of the Advanced Graphics settings on.

if you're already having issues with the VRAM it won't just go away - games will only get more demanding and after a certain amount of time you will be seeing this with half of the games you play. This is the main reason I recommend having more than 3.5GB on multi-monitor setups as each screen eats around 200-400MBs of VRAM just sitting at a desktop. Do the math and you get 400x3 for the larger res ones and 150x3 for the smaller ones for a total of 1.2+450 = 1.6GB of VRAM in use just looking at a desktop - that gives you about 2.5GB of usable VRAM for a game. It's not going to be enough. If you decide to sell the 970 then a R9 390 would work better for you, not only will it support all 6 monitors via display port hub natively but it will also give you 6GB of VRAM for the game and 2GB of the monitors (just how I see it ending up) - that's more than enough.

I was already looking into a 390 or mabye a 390x.

I told the guy with the phone no,and i think i am going to sell the iPhone for what i can and then go from there.
