980 ti Hybrid vs Fury X for Z170 Chipset?

XylimirGaming

Hello everyone,

So I am planning on upgrading to the z170 chipset (specifically the 6700k) and to either a 980 ti hybrid or fury x. I am limited to a micro atx form factor due to my case. (and would prefer to stay with micro atx since it will be totally possible with either of the gpus) I am initially leaning towards the 980 ti hybrid just because I've always been an nvidia guy. I only plan on gaming at 1080p (with a very slight possibility of 1440p in the future). It is for this reason that I am leaning towards the extra VRAM that the 980 ti hybrid has since both cards are very similar as 1080p. I also wish to have the option of adding an additional card, such as a 2nd hybrid or fury x, in the future. Currently, there are only two motherboards I can find for the z170 chipset that support sli. (This one & this one). There seem to be a lot of motherboards available for z170 with crossfire (19 according to pcpartpicker). Does anyone know why there are so many more boards with crossfire support than there are with sli support for z170?

I am currently leaning towards the 980 ti hybrid and the ASUS ROG Maximum VIII Gene board.

Any suggestions, information, or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

The fury x is only equivalent to the 980ti when you're at resolutions of 4k or higher.

Get the 980ti for this use case scenario.

Both are overkill for 1080p either way. 980 or 390X would be the way to go for this resolution, but to each their own.

Actually, a 970 or a 390 (Get 390) for 1080p is just fine for 60FPS or more. A 390 would be better at 1440 though.

We don't know if they're going for 144hz or 120hz, over just 60hz.

And if they're going to 1440p in the future, then you'll want something you can get a pleasurable experience out of for a long time without having to upgrade, the 390X and 980 are just better in that area.

390/970/390x/980 all suck at 1440p.

But I have high standards.

390 is the best bang for buck on 1080p and 980 ti is where it's at for 1440p.

Well, a 390 compared to a 970 ONLY. 390 wins at 1440 :P

Yes because we all have the money for 980Tis and Fury Xs xD

The 390 is less bad meaning it's better in this case :D

If you can't afford a 980ti, then don't be wasting money on nice 1440p panels or worrying about gaming at 1440p. Just game at 1080p. Easy win.

Now ofc there are some games that you can do with those at 1440p/4k, but generally speaking if the game is easy enough to run 60 FPS 1440p, then there isn't a need to buy anything other than a 390 anyways.

Like when people ask for 4k gaming builds but only mean CS:GO and LoL... ugh.

980Ti (custom design) is faster, so the choice should be easy.

Sounds like the op has a decent budget since a 6700k, M8G and 980Ti Hybrid/Fury X aren't exactly mid range.

Definitely go for the Ti and a 1440P monitor. I'm using a 4790k, Maximus VII Gene, 980Ti and a 1440p monitor - it kicks ass.

Good 1440 P monitors aren't anywhere like as expensive as they used to be a couple of years back. Take a look at the Dell ones for a good price/performance option. Or Yolo for the 1440P Gsync models if that's a possibility.
