980 or 390x

Arwanell

hello

I am thinking of upgrading my PC (GPU), and i have 2 options in my country for almost same prize:

GTX 980

or R9 390X

I am personally Nvidia/Intel fan, but dang! 8GB GPU sounds awesome, and I think 390x will last longer?

waiting for your advices,

TY! :)

Personally I would go with either a 390, or get the budget for a 980ti. The 980 strikes an odd place in regards to price/perf...

Strictly between the 2, I believe the 980 is faster, especially once overclocked, but the 390x has the edge in vram amount, which will be handy if you intend to get a 2nd card down the road.

According to this: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/R9_390_PCS_Plus/30.html The 390x is very slightly better at 4k, slightly worse at 1440p, and 9% worse at 1080p (the review is for 390, but look at the 390x chart). This site tests many games with many different GPUs and shows the average performance at stock. If you're going to be playing at 4k and may want to crossfire in the future, the 390x may be the way to go due to its extra vram. Nobody is sure how much DX12 will make a difference, but many people speculate current AMD GPUs will do a lot better, so there's that.

i ordered from germany too ... and upped from 670gtx to a evga 980ti superclocked+ acx 2.0+

take a look at computeruniverse       caseking or mindfactory IMO they're the cheapest stores...

your choice depends on 1080p or 1440p and maybe you need a better display

980 should be nice for 1080p but dont get a "stock" one.. the coolers arent that cool

If the R9 390X is cheaper, then get the 390X. If they cost the same and you game @1080p then the 980.

the GTX 980 is a better GPU than the R9 390X, is it worth 50€ more is another story though...it depends on the use key scenario.

EDIT: with the i5-4590 CPU the 980 will perform noticeably better across the board due to more CPU efficient drivers for DX11 on nvidia side..i would get the 980 in your situation.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1442?vs=1559

as you can see the cards trade blows but the GTX980 is noticeably faster most of the time, it's also more energy efficient and has more and better feature support (VXGI, MFAA, color compression, physx, gameworks, shadowplay etc.) and it also has better softwares and drivers.

Maxwell is just plain newer and better than GCN which is what the 390X is, a slightly improved hawaii board that came out two years ago .
