I have been looking at two different graphics card for a build I am working on. I want the build to last a long time but I don't need every bell and whistle. I already know a card with more memory will last longer. I have been looking between two different graphics cards and was wondering if it was worth the extra money. The two cards I am looking at are the Gigabyte 770 4gb($460) and the Gigabyte 760 4gb($300) cards. Which card do you guys think will last at least 4 years?

Both would last 4 years no problem.

Well 4 years is a long time, with the new consoles coming out which im guessing will increase graphics quality and requirements, for 4 years i'd get a 780, its a lot of money but divide that by 4 and you ll see its not much, compared to if you bought a 770 ( its the best out of the 2 ) and then 3 years into it you had to spend more money, but thats just my opinion.

TL:DR out of those two i'd get the 770 but...

Depends what games you will be playing and whether or not you would like to keep playing at high-ultra settings. If you don't mind lower settings later on, then both should last you a long while

They both would last but the GTX 770 would last with a performance advantage.

well yeah even a 650 would last, but depends on your expectations, in 4 years with a 770 you wont be maxing games out or anything like that

I really don't mind lower setting since I am currently running a Nvidia GT 420 and can play Crysis 2 ok.

If you really want it to last that long you should consider going with something like a 780 or wait for the 9000 series from nvidia, because both the 770 and the 760 use last gen cores.

Then either gpu should last you for a very long time, I am assuming

Your card might last for 4 years if you are plying 1080p and with no aa, my friend still rocks his 9800 gtx+ and it runs like a champ on 1280x1024, my other friend has a 5850 and runs 1080p, they are all good, generally in my experience if you are not going with a higher resolution ( by that i mean, modern cards in single config are 1080p cards if you want max settings ) you can have aq mid range card for up to 2 years, and a high end one for up to 4, keep in mind no bumping up of your resolution, if you can handle medium settings you might even have a mid range one for 4 years.

One more thing to consider, a lot of people were disappointed by the gtx 550 because it did not give a huge fps boost vs the old 9800 gtx cards  ( 8800gt, gts, gtx... ) and that iw because the 550 could process dx 11 and the 9800 gtx was a dx 10 card, so on paper it did not perform much better, but the visuals looked dx11 level, but the game did not have high fps with the 550, when playing a dx 10 or 9 game the 550 demolishes the 9800gtx, so today's cards will perform good later with new dx standards but will not have the same visual effects as a new card, if you can live with that you can keep a cardfor 4 years no problem, i have my gtx 670 for a year now, and there is nothing this card can't handle at 1080p and i do not intend to upgrade till at least 2016, unless the card dies...

This is just me, so your taste might be different, i value smooth gameplay more than visual effects so i can set them lower if i have to.

Yep, it will not last for maxing-out the setting. But it will last for a pretty good game performance with various filters turned down to average/medium and general quality to high. But this all depends on the games being played and future game engines. In actuality however, it's rather difficult to predict the future of games. We're just estimating it.

The Titan is already brought to its knees with Metro maxed out.

I can run the game maxed out @ 5760 x 1080 as long as i turn off advanced physics or whatever that option is.

If you want 4 years go the SLI route. Buy one 770 4gb today, then like a year or so down the road when you need more power, snag one on sale or used for $100 dollars or so less than today price and SLI them.

Yeah, I'm just suggesting that the idea of maxing out games is silly.
