Undervolting my cpu?

Hi !

 

so i have lots of heat issue with my fx 8350 on my asrock extreme3 R2.0 and i dunno if this board can handle it at all but one thing is its not running smooth i get stutters all over the place when my cpu hits 65 celsius and my cputin (HWmonitor) get 80 celcius easy if it wasn't for the throttle holding it back so these are my questions what better new mobo or new cooling.

 

and the main question can i undervolt my fx 8350 to run a bit cooler since it runs at 1.4 voltage (1,392 V) for some reason and would i need to turn the clock speed down a bit ?

Sure you can, want me to link you to a guide? But seriously, you should really be OVERCLOCKING the FX8350 if you're gaming etc or you'll be seriously limiting your performance. New motherboard is the better option, but I'm sure people will disagree with me.

 

ASUS ROG or sabretooth or even a Gigabyte UD5 are good choices for your chip. A UD5 killed one of my 8350's with a mild overclock but it was a Rev.1 board, My sabretooth is really difficult to kill, I was overclocking with 1.63v with some of my VRM having no contact with the VRM cooler. My board was a refurbished board from ASUS lol, great work from them there...

lol well alright i know the fx 8350 has lots of overclocking potential but i am trying to solve a heat issue here  

also is the MSI 970 gaming a good option? since its not that expensive and i believe its the best 970 board out there

I wouldn't recommend any MSI boards personally. If heat on the motherboard is an issue then you can strap fans to your socket and VRM to help get some of that heat away. Another good thing to do is increase your airflow through your case.

 

 

The three boards I quoted have good results, I really don't trust ASrock or MSI because going from observation they have a myriad of issues in most cases.

They are fine if you avoid OC to much but how hot is your room?

its currently Winter here and about 9 celsius ish outside and my room doesn't have a heater so around 18 i would guess since its pretty damn cold in here.

though keep in mind that my r9 290 heats my room pretty much since it hits 90 celsius

While the GPU will be heating up the air in your case and ambient, you might want to sort out your case airflow so it works best at removing the hot air from inside the case. 

 

You also need a better cooler for the FX cpu, a decent dual tower CPU cooler will work out for the best, I recommend either the Phanteks PH14 or the Noctua DH14, these will keep you nice and cold.

yes, very most likely yes,

leave everything at stock and try 1.35v manual and see if it's stable... if it is, lower some more... rinse and repeat, when it crash: up it  .02 and leave it there, good luck!

if the issue is the CPU cooling solution then yes defenetly consider upgrading that it's very important for long term reliablility of the system and it's a good investment those are somewhat future proof they fit all sockets and last a while a good 240mm water cooler or a big quiet tower heatsink is nice to have whenever a system is equipped with an unlocked CPU especialy one that can pull nearly 300W from the wall once properly clocked and tuned if it's on a solid overclocking motherboard it's a must have.

yes i know but i currently have nothing to spare so i can probable get something at christmas but i have to deal with it til then

Disable turbo core and drop the vcore to around 1.325V

it's really not worth the price of a new motherboard for a 200 or 300 mhz increase that will go un-noticed anyways..those AMD CPU's have very low IPC and ramping up the clockspeed can only do that much improvement...it's not worth the cost, it's not worth your time...just try to tweak the CPU to get 4.2 or 4.4ghz out of it in an efficient way, lower the vcore and do some testing and when you find your sweet spot leave it there and enjoy what you have.

If you want/need more performance than this i suggest instead you sell CPU and motherboard as a kit to get money toward an upgrade to an intel platform with DDR3 support and a strong quad-core CPU such as the i5-4590 or i5-4690K for example, or even a xeon E3-1231V3 which is an hyper-threaded quad-core at good price and re-use your RAM.

I wouldnt go out and spend 100$+ on a brand new completely outdated AM3+ motherboard at this point when you already own one that will suffice for your CPU and a slight healthy overclock...anyone stating otherwise is not all there and needs a good shaking back to reality!

Well the 290 could be a part of the issue but I am not sure, does the case have great airflow?

uhm its the define r5 with one 140mm in front for intake 140 mm back for exhaust and 120mm on cpu pull to the top 

but thought this is in games that are gpu intense and in other games that arent the cpu also throttles

Hmm I only have two 120mm + a 212 Evo to blow air in & out...
