What GPU to get...

c_marriott
Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

Yeah, I don't know whether to trust them entirely. So do you think I will be more than safe with a gold 550W?

You are :D - a 970 uses 200W-220W anyway - the TDP rating is very misleading.

Considering you have a good quality PSU (I think it's a rebrand of mine? not sure) - you are more than fine. If you are worried, just don't OC, you'll likely be getting 100fps stock anyway.

EDIT: You can trust the PSU queen :P

I was planning to get a R9 380 but I'm now thinking that I maybe able to afford something a bit more.

I'm not sure if I want a 970 but then I don't know what else there is.

I don't really want a 280x as its an older card, maybe if they release a 380X?

I'm looking at around £200-250 maybe a bit higher not sure right now.

I'm assuming Nvidias next generation of cards won't be out for a bit longer.

if you can get a 970, the the 390 is the same or better for usually cheaper.

As for a 380 - it outperforms a 960 by a good 15% on average. 380X might come soon though.

If you're thinking of a 970, get a 390 instead. Apparently the 380x is going to be released in a few months but who knows?

Just saw the 390, very tempting. What brand is best for it? The XFX was £260 I think. Also, do you all think my PSU will be enough? And that my CPU won't bottleneck it to the point I may as well get the 380? (I do plan on getting an i5 when possible)

Congrats on 10,000 posts!

The best brands for a 390 are XFX, Sapphire and MSI, stay away from Asus and Gigabyte.

Or I could get the 380 and save the money but what could I get with the extra? Better fans, another HDD?

Feel like a 390 is too much

If you're 1080p gaming and you don't think of getting a bigger monitor in the future, get a 380. If you were to have some money left over, keep it and wait until you really need to spend it :D

Your PSU is a SeaSonic rebrand - it's more than fine

XFX are decent - not as good as MSI or Sapphire but still good.

I'm only on 1050 so yeah, just feel like I may as well pay more now so I don't have to buy another card for a while, and 8GB of VRAM will be plenty.

The MSI card is £270 so that could be an option

I'm thinking about having this card for 3/4 years, do you think 4GB will be enough for that long or will games need more than that soon?

I maybe able to save a bit more and get a new mobo and CPU at the same time if I get the 380, be a push though

Some games are starting to push 4GB+ but it should be fine for the moment and if you do get a new CPU and mobo go for an i3 (or i5 if you somehow have the budget) and a B85 mobo.

As I say I do kind of want to keep this card for a long time so maybe 8GB will be better? I can get a new CPU and Mobo later on but I don't want to have to buy another card any time soon. I'll look into the parts, thanks for the suggestion!

PSU calculator recommended slightly over my PSU wattage (563W) with a 390 but it does only use 513 under load, if I wanted to upgrade later on what it still be enough?

8GB VRAM would be nice for the future but by then we'd already have a new line of cards to pick from :P

With a 390 the min PSU wattage I'd recommend is 600W.

do you think 550w will not be enough then? If not I may as well just get the 380(x) then

Or should I get the 970 while I can afford it?

Due to your current PSU (and a quick google) 550W should be ok for a 390 :D

I'll be getting it at Christmas so unless they bring out a 380x I guess that's what I'll be getting :D

Forgot to mention my CPU is OC'd to 4Ghz, will it still be enough? I also have a few case fans, 3 storage drives and a 212 Evo.

390 uses 300W, your system gets a generous 120W - PSU calculators are full of shit - a guy on the forum uses a 290X with a 400W PSU.
