What GPU to get...

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

Yeah, I don't know whether to trust them entirely. So do you think I will be more than safe with a gold 550W?

You are :D - a 970 uses 200W-220W anyway - the TDP rating is very misleading.

Considering you have a good quality PSU (I think it's a rebrand of mine? not sure) - you are more than fine. If you are worried, just don't OC, you'll likely be getting 100fps stock anyway.

EDIT: You can trust the PSU queen :P

390 uses 300W, your system gets a generous 120W - PSU calculators are full of shit - a guy on the forum uses a 290X with a 400W PSU.

Cool, thanks! I bought it this PSU as I thought I was getting the 380 so didn't think I'd need more luckily I still don't! If I need to I will downclock my CPU back to its original frequency.

Thanks, for the info, can't wait!

Now for the final question; what brand?

XFX have their black edition and normal edition card - whats the difference? One is £20 more than the other on Ebuyer.

Or there is MSI. I can't find any Sapphire cards oddly.

Also, are these cards the same as the 380's? Need to check if they fit

MSI and Sapphire are the top dogs, XFX and Power color follow a close second. XFX's BE are just higher clocked cards usually. For people like me who don't OC :P - but again.

Peak Power Draw with a 390X - you'll be drawing less :P

Maybe MSI then, not sure if it fits with my blue and black colour scheme though. Kind of like the look of the XFX card. Oh right, won't bother with that then.

Will the card be under so much load that it will be using that amount of power anyway?

Depends on the game - usually you won't see max load in lower-demanding titles where you have V-sync 60 fps but say Witcher 3 Ultra will probably be maxing it quite nicely or near-maxing. It can't even hold 60 fps Ultra with a 970 and it's an Nvidia game. I'd say if you have it at stock and you're not going crazy with overvolting your CPU you will be perfectly fine - worst case, CPU draws 150, GPU 300 and 50 for drives you still get 50W of headroom.

Next game I plan to play is Battlefront, possibly the new CoD and probably Far Cry Primal sooner or later. It'll be at 1050 (I have two screens but only game on one), want it on as high settings as possible so Ultra. I don't see it pushing it that much really. Yeah should be alright then

In battlefront a 390 is equal to a 980 - it LOVES AMD's hardware for some reason

That's that then, hopefully all will be okay then. Still have a little bit to wait before I can buy it.

Thanks for your help everyone!
