R9 390x worth it?

Matt_Twinkletoes

Welp - so much for the hot argument - that's cooler than a 960 in some cases xD

To be fair the coolers on the 960 compared to the 390x are pretty bitchmade :P

True. But the 390X is not a volcano as some describe it :D Asus are just bad at cooling them.

From the sounds of the reviews I read, the Asus just has really crappy fan curves to keep noise down apparently.

I can agree - my fan tops out at 40% :D

I agree, I had the 290x asus matrix and that thing had a terrible cooler, switched with my sapphire tri-x 290x and it tops at 75°c with folding@home

A little off topic but I wanna have your opinion on this. Asus coolers don't include any other form of vram cooling other than air blowing on it like the strix and DCII and even the Matrix. What do you think of it? Or is air blowing on it enough even with warmer running cards like Grenada or hawaii?

From what I've heard, VRAM uses little no no power and doesn't really get hot at all, I reckon as long as you're not pushing lots of volts through it, it shouldn't matter much.

I think it's probably a lot like normal RAM, doesn't really need a heatsink as long as a tiny bit of air gets to it.

I was going to mention LN2 as an example, but I reckon the cold from the core + PCB probably soaks/radiates into the vram as well.

(Since nobody uses cooling on their VRAM on LN2, since the outside of the pot usually is so big it covers nearly all of that stuff anyways.)

Well that is true for LN2. But I still can't figure out why Asus doesn't include active vram cooling when almost everyone else does it 0_0

Asus is Asus, and they love to cut corners where possible (which BTW never used to be a problem with them). Though Gigabyte is almost as bad, cheap fan motors and half of the vRAM on the back of the card-when there is room on the front for all of it (including the tracks).

So someone said the 390x is super hot and loud and that is the card I want to get. Will it get super hot and loud if I get the 390x? Also someone said it was not efficient power wise but it has the same TDP as the 390 and I'm upgrading to a 750w PSU. So is the 390x over the 390 a bad idea for 1080p? cause I'm willing to pay the extra 70 dollars for the 10% performance increase.

It's going to be fine - that guy is talking about Asus cards and those are awful - Sapphire or MSI will be cool and quiet. 750W is more than okay. you need 600W for a 390X

Fantastic quality - if you get 850W you can even crossfire 390Xs safely and possibly OC :)

I have a micro atx case/build so I dont think I'll have enougn room to crossfire. But on Newegg and PCPartPicker there is two versions of the 390 listed of the MSI 390 and one is the

R9 390X GAMING 8G LE

R9 390X GAMING 8G

Do you know the difference?

thanks for you help sorry about all the questions :)

LE is lower clocked for cheaper.

Do you think its stupid of me to get the 390x other 390 for 1080p for only a 10% difference in performance? and a 30% price difference?

I'd probably save the money myself but then again I can't afford either of those. If you can comfortable afford it then it's fine.
