Hey guys I need help choosing between X99 or Z170. I will be using this for my gaming channel so I will need to record and game with OBS. OBS runs on cpu and I was wondering if the 2 extra cores from the X99 would help. My budget is around 2700usd plus monitor and peripherals. Also, I have a preference for Asus sabertooth motherboards as I will be using this build for at least 3 years with minor upgrades along the way. I only need like 480 gb of SSd and I don't use hdd.

If anyone wants to put together a build list then I should let them know that some things are confirmed.

RAM: corsair lpx 3200 16 gb

Storage 480 gb Intel 730

Psu coolermaster v850

I also have online classes and I use alot of slit screen when doing homework or reports. I don't play insane games just some light games like Cs Go and Cod at most tho at 1440p. I want the Asus mg279q for monitor.

The skylake CPU is better for gaming, but those extra cores would help for streaming and rendering videos.

5820k for sure!!!

Here's my suggestion.

Skylake-E is coming within a year or sooner, so honestly X99 isn't a good idea right now especially since the chipset will have more features, native thunderbolt 3, etc.

So what I would do is actually choose z170 right now, and then next year upgrade to skylake-e.

This is what I'm doing, as it won't be that bad to upgrade as it's just a motherboard and cpu upgrade.

I'm Batman!

True but X99 I'd the enthusiast line up that is update every 4 to 5 years meaning I am future proof, unlike the z series mobo which are replace every year.

It's due to be replace the middle or end of next year, still didn't stop me buying x99 2 months ago..

Yes i still am going with the X99 cuz skylake-e will need new mobo and the features like native thunderbolt 3 and stuff that i will never use. Plus X99 is the enthusiast line which is only updated every 4-5 years meaning i can be happy and not feel outdated every year as in the case with getting a z series mobo

I'm somewhat confused with these new motherboard platforms but looking for the best gaming class components. I've been concentrating on Z97 and DDR3 so far for a new build soon (after some home repairs first) but not wondering if it's finally time to should drop that and move onto DDR4 platforms like the X99 and Z170 since the memory prices have dropped some. In the past when DDR4 motherboards came out people here said stick with DDR3 because it wasn't worth the change. But I do want to stay future proof and the cost is my last consideration to worry about.

If I go that route then I'm looking at higher end Z170 gaming motherboards like the new ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Impact (mITX) or ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Gene (mATX) instead of their Z97 cousins. I'm at the tipping point from Z97 to Z170. Do you guys think the same or going the more cheaper budget midriange route or the high end X99 class boards?
