390s vs 980

Thinking about selling my 980 and getting two 390s. Would that be worth doing?

I'll be upgrading to 1440p later this year, and or possibly just another 1080p to go along side mine.

Please for the love of all things don't recommend a 980ti. In firestrike my overclocked gpu scores just one thousand under a stock 980ti.

I would wait until you decide whether or not you're actually going to go with 1440P, or just adding another 1080P monitor. It wouldn't make much sense to sell the 980 now, and pick up two 390s just for the extra vRAM if you choose to add another 1080P display. It's always best to purchase everything at once in case you change your mind later on.

 

4GB of vRAM is also enough for 1440P.

I could sell my 980 for $400 and get a 390 for $300. So I'll have $100 left. I don't think I could save up $400 to buy a used one. Atleast I'd only have to save $200. Also I kinda wanna try amd, I've never had an amd card before.

If you don't mind going used, 780Ti SLI is the best value for the money.

Pretty much if your playing games at 1440p or higher you want an R9 390 or an R9 390X as the 4GB of vRAM on Nvidia's desktop GPU is ridiculous.

You do realize that games use vram as cache right? You know, incase it needs it. When I got my 970, SoM suddenly spiked from about 2gb usage to over 3 without touching a single setting from my old r9 270 setup. Why? Because it could, not because it needed to.

1440p doesn't need 4gb as a minimum. You'd be just fine with 3.

Granted, if you max the aa to a point where you are getting 4 fps, the vram usage will be through the roof, but that's far from a realistic representation.

What games do you play? Skrim? Mordor? GTA V? BF4? Other VRAM heavy games? Some, well-optimized games, such as Witcher 3 (which only pulls 2.5GB at 1440p max), will work fine. Others won't.

BF3/BF4, GTA V, Skyrim with tonnes of mods, Witcher 3. I usually leave the AA at fxaa, so that likely why my vram usage is fairly reasonable. I don't see the point in wasting performance on a vaseline filter.

Nope. Skyrim with the optimized textures including the DLC (I gave up on ENB as the performance hit was too high for very little gain).
