Just wandering what will be enough to run 144hz im seriously thinking about it.

i3 4340/970?

i5 4460/980ti?

I only have like 1.1k to spend (AUD), already have the rm550, antec p180, hard drives.

Needs to be able to run battlefront 144hz.

Basically im just asking if a 970/i3 could handle 144hz in new games - dont have to be maxed out, happy with medium and high settings/no aa or ao

right! I completely forgot AMD. I'd probably get the 390 over the 970 but not over the 980ti

The 980 Ti is overkill for that.

Would a used 290 be safe investment? Not to sure about mined cards and how to avoid them. They're alot cheaper used

290X is about equivalent to the 390.

I'm not aware of any CPU that can handle modern AAA titles at 144hz minimum. Not even an i7-6700k that's highly overclocked.

Eh, I'd equate a 290 to a 390 and a 290x to a 390x because that's exactly what they are. The only difference between the 290 and 390 is chip binning and the extra 4GB of VRAM, provided you don't have a reference 290 which has less robust power delivery. The chips themselves are literally identical.

You should get a 390 over a 970 in any case, not sure on the price difference in AUS.

Wait are you upgrading a current rig? What do you already have?

why? its only 1080p,

It's more for the framerate's benefit rather than resolutions benefit.

Uh no. His scenario is 1080p. 4GB is more than sufficient for 1080p in any current game + mods. Getting the 144hz he desires would simply be GPU horsepower so to speak, not additional VRAM. It would be like having a gaming rig with 64GB of ram. Extra memory goes unused and does absolutely nothing for the build.

An additional frame buffer is always welcome, especially in the event of game performance oddities like an explosion involving many particles.

fx 4300 and hd 7850 - asrock 960

So then you just need a processor and a GPU? And the monitor? Or is the monitor separate because I hit 1000 bucks with just the CPU/motherboard and a GPU.

I also don't know your power supply

Do you know anyone in the states who can smuggle you PC hardware?

Really it's going to be hard trying to push any game to 120fps or higher unless you got a fury/980 or a dual GPU set up, you could maybe wait for the 380X to drop and eventually crossfire it, it would be cheaper than a 980ti but should preform around the same.

Thank you for this reply:

-Monitor not a problem

-The parts look nice (Thanks!)

-RM550 Corsair

-Yes, but shipping costs would make it not worth it, unless there are some crazy good deals (which sometimes there are) in my experience.

-I'm okay with lowering settings, but its not easy to find medium settings fps tests on all the games I like :/

Well I dont see much reason to get a 390 besides vram

It's also around the same price as the 970.
