If you're gaming, rule of thumb is Intel at the moment unless your budget is pretty low.

Generally Intel i3 is the best option but if it's really tight I would go with a AMD Athlon

The only AMD CPUs that are worth getting are the Athlons.

FX are bad.

It was a long time ago when FX CPUs were actually better than Intel CPUs in multi core performance.

Intel Xeon E3-1231V3, probably best for budget.  it's only 250 bucks.

Depends on the task, budget, and location.

 

Not everyone gets the slack of the US, and the price to performance with intel 6-8 cores just isn't there.  AMD 6 core is what 97 bucks?  An Intel 6 core is 356 bucks.  Is the price to performance there for the intel?  No!  What about the Intel 8 core i7s?  Hm, 900+ bucks?   If it was worth it rather than just the power I'd agree, but those Intels just aren't worth it for that.
