I am currently building budget PC. I was wondering if i3-4170 or FX-6300 is better processor? Can you help pls?

i3.

Stronger cores. Better future proofing. Which is a word I do not like, since you can one day easily swap thst i3 out for an i7.

True.  Also the i3 has a TDP of about half the 6300

depends on what you're doing, and if you're planning on getting an upgrade.

 

the i3 will beat the FX in applications that use 1 or 2 threads, and will perform similar in applications using 4 threads.

(multi-threaded applications, the FX will beat it)

 

if you need multicore performance, and DO NOT plan on upgrading (that last part is very key) the FX will be better.

 

but the i3 will allow you to just swap it out for an i5 or i7 in the future if you have money/need more cores.

I can personally testify that my i3 has worked out better than I expected. the 4170 is only slightly slower than my CPU, so for the most part your experience would equal mine.

Multithreading isn't as big as an issue as you would expect. As long as you keep your expectations reasonable with a ~$120 CPU you won't be let down.

Funny how there's now both FX-4170 and i3-4170 also with skylake i3: i3-6300 and FX-6300.

I would say: wait for skylake i3, you have nothing to lose(if DDR3L is as cheap as DDR3, I haven't looked at prices)

FX6300 will keep up or beat the i3 in games after 2013.

In games before 2013, the i3 will be much faster.

The benefit of the FX is a more feature rich and solid mobo choice on the lower end (sub 75 bucks)

The AMD boards (most of them) support crossfire, which is quite handy for those who wish to add a second GPU rather then buy one prohibitively more expensive one later on.

the I3 will give you a better upgrade platform later on. Do bear in mind that both the LGA 1150 and AM3+ socket is by all means "dead". No new products will come to these platforms, and whatever you choose, will eventually require a larger investment on your end to upgrade (Ram + Mobo + CPU)

Personally, if you are not going to upgrade anytime soon, i would go with the FX and wait for ZEN to come around next year.

If you are going to upgrade before next summer (at least), then i would go with the i3.

In raw CPU tasks, the intel CPUs are generally better, although there are exceptions.

final solution. if you're planning to use your pc for gaming and those stuff just go with the fx6300 but if you're going into some 3D rendering and editing even gaming just pick the inte i3 4170. so simple :)

Personally I would grab a FX-6300 unless you are gonna upgrade to a i5 or i7 later... 

 

FX-6300 better at AAA games, i3 is better at f2p and classics! :D

Seems like a bit of an over reaction to someone mentioning a fact on the datasheet.  I also didn't realize that every TDP ever listed is actually several pieces of information, all of which wrong.  Thanks for pointing that out.
