of course 8GB will be better. but you will need to release the old RAM, cause it may cause incompatibility if it mix and matched. so if u pick 8GB your total RAM is still 8GB.

Upgrade your whole laptop is a better idea. Not trying to be a troll but that's some ancient hardware and time for a real upgrade.

8GB is obviously better, but it's easy to live without it.

just don't open too many chrome tabs.

You can't go wrong with a ram upgrade and 8GB is the max for the laptop. It is the most cost effective way to have more processes running and it is far less expensive that getting a new laptop. Some people just think that there is no value in having something that works the way you want it, does what you want in an acceptable amount of time. Some people just have to have the latest, greatest, fastest thing. Ask yourself what do I use it for? will this do the job. Just my 2 cents

You can find Kingston ValueRAM for laptop (DDR3 8GB 1600 MHz CL11 at 1,35V) for aprox $40 and as valdyrgramr said, add an SSD (recommend 240+- GB, can get the samsung 850 series or kingston ssd now for 80-100$ worst case) and you'll have for 120-150$ a beast laptop.

Seriously, an SSD will gain more speed than 16 gb of ram or a laptop upgrade, you'll notice very very quickly and it's not that big amount of money, just something to keep going for I'd say 5 years more, you've got a good CPU, so all you're components will be fine, GPU wouldn't recommend gaming or 3D reendering, but taking that, you'll still have a badass laptop; of course it's old hardware, lots of laptop i5 are better now, but the little gain on performance doesn't justify the price

His laptop is antiquated. His laptop's CPU is mediocre at best. Coming from 1st gen to current (6th gen) would have a massive upgrade. He doesn't have a badass laptop.  A badass laptop has dual GTX 980Ms , desktop CPU , 32gb ram etc. He needs to upgrade.

I personally don't think that upgrading RAM from 4 to 8GB with this GPU will make any difference at all.

my GT540m still plays some recent games just fine if i turn down some graphics settings.

also, are we all straigth forward guesstimating it's for gaming only?

for all we know he just needs more ram for chrome tabs...

Great Idea, I'll do just that and ask him. And my first thought with a  GT 540M was gaming but I also considered:

Cadwork

3D modelling (somehow on that awful machine)

Photo Editing

Video Editing

Office work (Really though? Cos GT 540M ain't for office work)

well, the GT series (10-40) is mostly "media oriented"

- cadwork: i've done it on a desktop not much more powerful than this laptop, and it went along pretty well

- 3d modelling - not everuyone can afford an MSI titan...

- poto editing can as well run on a netbook...

- video editing - likewise as 3d modeling

- office work *may* actually be the reason here, i picked up my laptop (with a GT540m) for this, with some light gaming on the side.

mine still suffices, aside from well.. its samsung so its derpy as all hell at times, and 6GB ram just isnt cutting it anymore.

i've considered picking up some ram myself as well, but i just am not on the road a lot anymore, so its not worth it.

Well I play games and recently 16gb is quite necessary for Decent performance. (This applies most for badly optimized games and windows itself lol)

And as a gamer and also a programmer (hobby) i need large amounts of storage as well as a fast CPU and GPU.

Mobile side - Dual core i5 vs Dual core i7? i5 wins for me. Quad core i7 mobile is a different story entirely. Not that i'm suggesting you need a quad core i7 for laptop. To the contrary, Laptops should use i5s unless it's a mobile workstation.

I love how some people (like you) have nerves of steel and test the minimum requirements? Also BTW I need to point out stuff to you since you seem a bit like computer noob.

1. 3D modelling requires decent graphics (920M suffices)

2. Photo Editing requires decent graphics for no lag when editing (also CPU and RAM are important for this)

3. CAD work - A) What CAD software are you using?  B) Only basic CAD creation would work on that.

4. You buy an ultra book for office work, not a freaking thick media laptop.

whoa there.

i know as a fact photo editing can run on shit graphics x'D

i do it with my laptop, not that the 7660G is bad, more that its clocked at 140~160Mhz. (with ddr2 video memory. just remembered that fuckup HP made. )

CAD work i have nothing to say, same for 3d modeling. i have yet to spent enough time in those areas to truly understand. i'd rather not just look at numbers and give a ''looks good''

he also wanted to game. if he got an ultrabook for that he would have only been able to do the office work.

Don't imply to me that I am the reason Microsoft has automatic updates. You are obviously caught up in the newer is better. I have realize that I have perhaps violated 2 of my personal rules with this post (Don't respond to trolls and never get into a battle of the wits with an unarmed opponent) but you went where someone with you apparent intelligence should not have gone. I apologize to the other forum users for my rant. P.S. I don't think that I would EVER need your help kid. :-)

Did I help you to fix your problem or at least did offer somewhat valuable advice? Consider giving my post a "informative" or "thumbs up".
