The Pentium G3460 has the edge in single threaded programs by a decent margin; the 860K has the edge in multithreaded programs by like 200%

Pentium, the 860k indeed is the better processor however, LGA 1150 offers you a huge upgrade path in comparison.  Really, it'd be better to save a little longer and get a cheap i3 though...

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

I don't see why you would get a G3460 over a G3258 and lose the overclocking abilities. I personally chose the G3258 because of the higher single threaded performance which is more important in the games I play, as well as the ability to upgrade later on. also, with the pentium, you get quicksync encoding, which is tremendously useful for recording/streaming (yes, it IS possible with the G3258, I have done it).

FTR: you cannot say flat outfit the 860k is a better processor than the pentium. they both have their strengths and weaknesses in certain areas. while the 860k might be better for gaming workloads that require more than 2 threads, or other multithreaded workloads, the pentium beats it in any sort of single threaded, or IPC dependent workload.

I know these are comparing the 860k to the G3258, but at stock speeds, the G3258 performs just slightly slower than the G3460, and benchmarks for the 3460 are hard to come by.

Please don't buy a dual core... Just.. Please don't. You will end up like the folks posting in Troubleshooting asking why their CPU usages are always at 25% even on a fresh install.

Forget "upgrade path", it's wasted money and most people won't even bother. Just save up and buy a proper quad core or higher.

you just quoted me 3 different videos about the same game. I will have you know, GTAV didn't stutter before Rockstar patched it, somehow causing the game to stutter when using a CPU with 2 threads. pretty much any game that the G3258 can't run is due to the game's Publisher being stupid.

and also, dual cores are not "dead." the are perfectly capable cpus for everyday use, or for things such as a home server/HTPC/NAS, not to mention they seem to do alright except for the few games like GTAV and Far Cry 4.

They are alright for everyone who doesn't want to play AAA games basicly. MMO's or CS:GO will run perfectly on the pentium so i would say what processor you get is based on what games you play.

If 4 Athlon cores perform 200% of 2 pentium cores, wouldn't that mean 2 Athlon cores perform the same as 2 Pentium cores? Maybe my math is off and just wanted to point out that 200% doesn't sound logical

For the most part, a pentium will do just fine in aaa titles with a few exceptions where the developers cripple a game when used on a cpu with fewer than 4 threads. It really sad, but true.

Athlon also has a LOT less frame drops in almost any game that uses 4 threads.

Pairing a G3258 with 1333 memory is hilarious. Here's what happens when you pair it with 2133

Erm - it makes more sense to get an i5 4460 + 1333 RAM than a Pentium + 2400 RAM . . . .

Lol.. Just like my 6700K doesn't support DDR4 3600 right? That 3258 ran ddr3 2600 with ease
