Let us know how it is. You're gonna play this for a while, then come back to PCars/AC and massively blow the first corner wondering why it won't turn while going a billion mph. lol :P

The reminds me of a funny story from back in the Gran Turismo 4 days on the PS2. Friend of mine asked me to help him setup his Dodge Viper. He said he fully modified it but was still struggling with the car. I take the controller and hammer the gas. Thing blasts down the straight (forget which track) and I then hit the brakes at the appropriate point, pretty much nothing happens. Car careens off into the wall. "Didn't you upgrade the brakes?" I asked him, to which he replied, "Why would I do that? Doesn't make the car go faster."  *faceplam* 9_9

"What do you mean I can't drift this sequence of corners with full throttle? Where's the nitrous??"

Or alternatively

-shocked- "The front end isn't clipping onto every other object on the road - WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT"

Some of the core game files for upcoming DLC are always updated in a previous patch, so it's likely they just sniffed around and found the 3D model data. However that doesnt always guarantee that the model will be 100% accurate, as SMS have been known to hold back some attributes until the DLC drops, be it physics or sound tweaks, updated engine data, etc.

This has always been a thing since the game released, but way back then it was limited to livery files being exposed ahead of launch and going from there.

4 hours of playtime logged, plus 1 1/2 hours troubleshooting the game. WELP.

So far really enjoying it though. The wheel takes some time to get used to but actually feels really good.

Lol, that looks like the MP race at Monza I did the other day with randoms (GT3). I qualified mid-pack in a field of about 20. Some guy in the back jumped the start and came flying down the center, plowing into a bunch of guys ahead of me. Cars literally in the air as the light when green. Somehow I got past all that and around turn 1-2 without much more than a few bumps. But there was at least 1 car above me at one point, lol. Wish I had recorded that one... From now on I record every race, at least just the start/first lap. Never know when crazy stuff like this is going to happen. :P

So does that game have online MP? How are the trophy trucks? Those jumps look like fun. :)

Are those in-game shots? If so, I must say it looks great! :)

Silly question, but how are the physics? Typical arcade? How big is the map?

Also, how are the vehicle/engine sounds? Do they sound right when given the appropriate upgrades? (louder exhausts, turbo etc.? proper engine sounds per vehicle?)

In high/ultra settings, the game is gorgeous but it is lacking any corssfire support for me atm.

Physics are typical arcade but with a wheel you get really good feedback; the transitions between drifts are a tad weird at 900 degrees and when you're actually in a drift you're not really doing much work with the throttle or steering (easy mode if you will). Grip driving feels similar to Grid 2 imo. I haven't driven the entire map yet, but it's pretty big  solely because the different districts are laid out as a "ring" around a fictional lake, and the density of the roads between them is very sparse. If they did something like the map in NFS:MW or NFS World they may have gotten a better free roam environment, but as it stands it's pretty decently sized. (plus you can teleport between events)

Vehicle sounds do a pretty good job of differentiating marques, mainly because Speedhunters put a lot of work into doing the real-world audio recording. There is a bit of turbo whoosh but it's not very prominent; if anything, the NA engines make the best noise but there are exceptions (i.e. the RWB 911 sounds very high pitched, but the EJ25 in the STI has the iconic deep burble). Last I checked the exhausts don't make that much of a difference in overall loudness, but each changes the tone slightly.

I'll edit some videos from my playthrough later. I've had a hell of a time trying to record stuff for Automobilista, and really didnt feel like doing any work after getting super frustrated.

So with being on the verge of the VR explosion that is upon us, I'm wondering how much this will effect racing sims and ones skills there-in. Will it help make you faster or slower? Ultimately I think it will depend on the individual.

IMO, having that additional depth-perception will help greatly with consistency and precision. Especially when it comes to braking zones. You try to judge as best you can but still miss-judge from time to time as trying to line things up in 3D on a 2D display presents a challenge (for me anyways). Being able to better know exactly where your car is, I think will help a lot.

Where it may hinder some people is in the perception of danger. Looking at a monitor that's 2 feet away from your face, it's pretty easy to really push the limits and "have no fear". You know it's not real, that it's a game. But with a VR headset on, suddenly it's as if you are really there and you cannot simply "look away". For some people, subconsciously that may instill the instinct to be more "cautious" with their driving and hold back a little more than usual.

I'm seriously thinking, instead of upgrading to a 1440p ultrawide G-sync display later this year, to just save up and wait a little longer for a VR headset. My current 24" 1080p 60hz Asus is still fine for all the other games I play, but I'm really starting to crave that VR experience for racing.

What do you guys think? How do you think VR would effect your skill level and driving style (if at all)? Have any of you tried a racing sim with VR yet? If so, what was it like?

Discuss... :)

In the ten hour trial, I never really managed to understand how to trigger drifts - it felt way too assisted for my liking, but the drifts always seemed to kick in when you least wanted them to. Maybe it just takes some more practice to get used to. On account of the engine sounds, I quite like them, and their variety. I started out with the Civic, which sounded quite subdued, at least compared to the 700+ HP track monster it turned into. Very raspy sounding, and loud crackles on downshifts.

A few shots from my time with the trial:

@MEC-777 1080p60 High, still adjusting to the game so I overcorrect during drifting but I'm fine with grip driving. Manual transmission is a bit odd though - it doesnt downshift as quickly as what I'm used to, and in some cars you can have 7/8 gears (for some reason). Other than that the game is a blast once you adjust to it - I use my handbrake (mapped to 4th gear) to initiate and downshift immediately, then quickly counter to a shallow angle countersteer; I've found that immediately lifting the throttle after initiating and maintaining 30-50% throttle can help stabilize the car and adjust your line.

Granted, the BRZ is only at 450hp and the STI is a stock 300hp. Both wrapped in chrome to test reflective surface rendering and lighting.
