GTX 770 to replace GTX 460?

orangecat

Is 2GB of vRam enough? The main reason i wonder is because I currently have 768MB of Vram and its not even enough at all anymore. I want 4GB so when the card becomes older even if its still fast I don't want to end up like I am now where I need more vram not GPU power.

I'd wait a little longer as well.

You won't need 4Gb unless you're doing more than 1080P gaming. And more Gb does not mean faster.

CPU: Intel core i5 3570 Motherboard: Gigabyte-H77-DS3H Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB  GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB  PSU: Seasonic G Series 550W

But it does mean I wont get 1FPS when i run out of vram.

Same answer as everyone LOL.
And yes, 2GB would be plenty for 1080p gaming.

Good enough.

See if you can find a deal on a 760. The 760 is probably the best value of any GPU right now.

You could wait until next gen AMD, though.  That might get you a better deal.

What's your budget?

Don't get bought up into all this VRAM hype. You'll run out of GPU power before VRAM will be an issue. IMO the 760/770/7950/7970 doesn't need anymore then 2gb ram as they are too weak to run high resolutions.

If you plan on SLI/Crossfire, yeah sure go for 4GB. But single card 2/3GB is plenty and I wouldn't waste more money on 4gb. No point in measuring usage from games as they will sometimes use whatever is available. With my 560 Ti I didn't feel it needed anymore then 1GB.

If you're budget is $250, get a GTX 760 or 7950. Both cards are equally as good, at stock the 760 is faster, at overclocks the 7950 is faster but they give the same game play experience. Maybe a 5% difference in performance when OC'D between them.

If you're budget is $320ish get a 7970.

Keep in mind you get three games with the AMD 79XX series now too.

You can wait for the 9XXX series, but with technology you could always find a reason to wait.

Get a 4 Gb GTX 770 and you will be fine in the vram department for a while. Most people say "wait for 9000 series" but nvidia is implementing software features that Radeon doesn't have right now like geforce experience and shadowplay and i'm sure they will be working on a streaming feature for geforce cards as well. Nvidia is doing a great job and as a nvidia user, I have never been let down.

I'd highly recommend considering a 7970 now that they've dramatically dropped in price.
An overclocked 7970 and an overclocked 770 perform within margin of error, however the 7970 has more video memory, higher memory bandwidth, is 100 dollars less expensive and comes with 3 games for free.
The higher memory bandwidth and capacity allows the card to perform very well with anti-aliasing & on higher display resolutions.

Wait for 9XXX series

They could rename the graphics card forum 'wait until the 9000 series'

I would only recommend waiting for the 9000 series if the budget is over 400 dollars, because the newer cards will be priced at around 550$ and 450$.
The rest of the graphics lineup will remain the same.

well even if he is a Nvidia fan boy. he should wait until black friday if he can. Im pretty sure gtx 460 plays most games on high settings for 1080p. I am still rolling with my ancient gtx 280 and its not too bad for 1080p gaming. gtx 460 is basically same performance as my gtx280. and I am sort of like him right now. wanting to upgrade to a gtx 760. but I am going to wait until I see the specs and price/performance of the new cards before I buy a new card. Also. with new cards coming out. there might be more price slashing for the older cards :) and I will wait until black friday to hope for a good deal.

Nice man! I'm still using a gtx 275 myself, the only downside to it is I can't play Crysis 2 from the humble bundle...I'm so glad that I stuck it out for 8 months...so many new cards, so much cheaper :)
