It's not possible yet, the cores and memory VRM's are still to large for it to fit into a M.2 slot however in the future with manufacturing process improvements and technology like HBM I see this becoming a possibility.

So they make small budget friendly, low power cards to systems but they are all made for PCI express

What If they made a m.2 like gtx 950 would this be cool or am i craze =)

its called mxm

Isn't that a old Moblie GPU?

It is, but there also are much newer ones. They aren't as small as an M.2 slot though.

My guess would be that it's for laptops. If not that, then for very low profile setups.

i feel that the current GPUs laptops have are good enough... especially since full desktop gpus can now be fir into them

yeah, its the mxm interface that never really caught on. Same would happen with an m.2 gpu if it was even possible.

how so imagine something like this is say a gigabyte brix

in that case it's better to have the chip soldered on anyway. even smaller.

the cpu will be outdated anyway. those are soldered too.

That's why it's smart to get a good cpu in the first place (for a desktop). :)

that's not what we are talking about tho.

that definetly would be cool if you could make it really low profile and if it was designed for a certain motherboard you could make it so that a system could be so compact that it would actually start to become practical.

you could add it right underneath the cpu an make coolers that would actively cool the cpu and gpu at the same time

this would be great for something like an xbox or play station. it would allow enthusiasts to up grade the hardware in there systems with out

just upgrading there inter system because every thing is soldered on. It would also make the CPU run faster not having to directly deal with

onboard graphics similar to a k scew intel cpu paired with a graphics card. Also this would allow you to upgrade your laptop graphics cards and things like Nvidia shield devices. Most laptops these days have m.2 support but if you want better graphics you have to buy a new laptop because its proprietary. if an r9 nano can pack a major punch at 6x5in then they should be able to make like a cut down version of that that runs at r9 380/390 speeds in like a 3x2 which is similar to a ssd size an if they are using the same fury memory chip on it but at like 50w you could cool that with a small dense heat sink and some 40mm fans. just thinking of this sound awesome.

lol a shield portable rocking 970 performance. Playing AAA titles on a portable device like a tablet at 60+ fps.

They already have MXM cards.. how do you think they can fit a 980 into a laptop, they couldn't possibly make them any smaller

well they can by building the GPU with HBM. And also most MXM cards are proprietary to the brand of laptop, and are not upgradable with ease.

MXM is none-proprietary .. and can be swapped out in a couple of minutes (or heck seconds in some cases) that is the ENTIRE point of it existing,

however laptops must be built to take into account cooling different cards, if you buy a thin laptop built to cool an 940m sticking a GTX 980 inside the cooling is just not going to cut it

a couple of minutes vs a couple of seconds, MXM requires you in most cases to completely take the laptop apart take off thermal past etc.

Im talking about a card that would sit with your hard drive area and is easy to get to and requires 1 screw to remove the card. it would be like swapping a stick of ram. And MXM is not there yet but it may be at once Nvidia gets into the HBM game. and your right the biggest issue with this would be cooling.
