GPU upgrade or CPU/Mobo upgrade?

Soulstrife
Go to solution Solved by Soulstrife,

Alright, thank you for the suggestions! I have enough parts around to get my current cpu, mobo and gpu put together with different components apart from my current machine.

If I can sell that for some cash, add my current budget of 400, would this be a good combo?

Hi all,

Currently I have a AMD 8320 (oc to 4.3), Asus M5A99FX Pro 2.0 and MSI 270x 4gb gpu.

Should I consider a new gpu to get better performance out of newer games or do a i5 / mobo combo and keep the 270x?

Budget is $400USD. This pc would have to last for another 2 to 3 years.

Thanks!

i would buy a used r9 290 (200) and get an i5 4460 and save up for a cheap h97 motherboard

EDIT: if you plan to upgrade everything i would start with gpu, yes it would bottleneck but it will be your biggest performance gain

Main PC |CPU - i7-6700k|GPU - R9 290x tri-x 4gb|RAM - 16gb ddr4|MOBO - MSI z170 - A PRO|HDD - WD 1TB/240gb Sandisk |PSU - 700w Raidmax

Laptop |CPU - i7 4720hq|GPU - 960m 2gb|Ram - 8gb 2x4|Model - y50-70 Touch|SSD - 240gb Patriot drive|Display - 1920x1080 IPS touch

In your case I would probably get a new GPU.
Something like an R9 390 would fit quite well. But I'm not sure how much of a bottleneck your overclocked 8320 is.

Maybe someone else can give you more details on that. I stay far away from AMD CPUs :P
