my I7-4790K keeps overclocking.....

Longshot

so i have a I7-4790K which its base clock is 4 ghz and boost clock of 4.4 ghz.

my motherboard is the MSI GAMING 5 motherboard which comes with the MSI GAMING APP

anyway, the app tells me that my cpu is overclocking itself to 4.4 ghz without me doing anything.

now im using the intel cooler that you get with the cpu and im scared that it will hurt the cpu because i know you shouldnt use the intel cooler if you're overclocking...

is this a problem? should i get a better cooler? (well i should get a better cooler but do i have to?) also if i have to what do you reccomend?

PLS HELP!

It overclocks itself when it thinks it can without hitting the temp limit.

Don't worry about it.

Edit: Have you checked your BIOS? I have the same mobo and the auto Overclock in the bios overclocked my cpu without me doing anything.

Guys - CPUs don't turbo on idle - mine stays at 800MHz idle.

Nah. Even if the mobo did overclock itself, it's within the turbo boost range. It won't do any harm to your cpu.

Besides, it's smart enough to downlock itself when it gets too hot. You're fine. Don't worry.

It depends on your power options.

Even on a desktop you have power options like a laptop. There's battery saving and there's high performance. I suspect you're on balanced because the balanced profile lowers the clocks on idle while the high performance profile pins it at 100%.

yes you do - anything above 80*C is not good for the CPU for extensive periods of time

Wow.

I didn't know that.

Ok yeah time for a new cooler. I recommend the Hyper 212 Evo as a cheap and effective alternative.

Man I need to upgrade to a 4790K soon.

don, if he's going to overclock, he needs a better cpu cooler. the 212 is fine for modest overclocks, but not for the 4790k...

edit:

he needs an nh-d14 or a phanteks model 14

Also, the 4790k's Turbno boost is wacked. It will stay at 4.4GHz across all 4 cores as long as there is any medium to heavy load on it. Unlike my i5 4440 which rarely goes above 3.1GHz no matter what.

Yeah I've heard good things about the NH-D14. Comparable to a H80i.

Water is overrated. Air cooling is more fool-proof.

i guess... i have an old antec 620 kuhler and it's been just fine since june of 2013. i've had no problems with it. if i were building a pc from scratch now, i'd use air cooling because it's quieter and looks way cooler

Its normal. The way the boost works on the 4790K it might as well be the base clock.
