I've been shopping around for a new 400 dollar build, and I'm not quite sure how much CPU power I need.  I play basic games like Dota 2 and Town Of Salem.  I also do 3D modeling, as I own a 3D printer which I use for projects.  On this system, I will be running Xubuntu Linux 14.04, and will be supplied with 8 gb of RAM, as well as an R9 270X.  Any recommendations for a CPU?

You should join the Linux Party, we have a Bash.

edit: i dont recomend this much but if your going to be modeling more then gaming and you need those extra cores and cant get an i5 or decent i3 you could go the amd route with a fx 6300 or something similar

No just no.  i have a G3258 OC'd to 4.2GHz and it struggles in a lot of things especially 3D modeling.  Get yourself an AMD fx-6300 and do not make the same mistake i made.

I do not want a dual-core CPU, because some of the software I'm using benefits from more cores.  Also, games I would like to purchase in the future do not run on dual core.

You may want to look at an FX8350. It's an 8 core. They may be a bit outdated but I think you can find it for dirt cheap at this point.

CPU - Intel Core i7 3770K @ 4.60GHz 1.264v | RAM - Corsair Dominator Platinum 16.0GB (2x8GB) | Motherboard - ASUS P8Z77 WS | Graphics - EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 | Storage -  120 GB Samsung 840 EVO | PSU - Corsair RM650 | Case - Corsair 550D

When I had an FX-6300 rendering was one hell of a task for it, overclocked to 3.8 ghz.
