717 are dead after a stampede in Saudi Arabia I'm not really sure how this could have happened, but apparently a few people are killed every year in similar events.

Unfortunaly these things can happens when large crowds gather. I can happen in Mecca, it happend in Germany and it can happen anywhere with a large crowd.

From what I heard, some people began panicking, and people were unfortunatly trampled to death, but even the Saudi officals aren't entirely sure. 

I even have a friend who is in Mecca. Hopefully he is OK.

Thing is authorities seem to be very um... indifferent on how to manage the islamic pilgrimage. It's almost a direct consequence of how Islam is HUGE right now and yet the reception capacity has not caught up to a safe standard.
