How Do Connections Between ISPs work?

I was thinking in school today, how does someone with Comcast communicate with someone with Verizon? This probably seems like a basic question, but where does it happen?

I'm an engineer at an ISP and I used to work on our circuits. I agree that Speedbird's link is a good summary.
