Why does someone need 61 cores/a PCIe based Xeon? Just curious.

Its a competor to gpu compute. Its basically a gpu that will run normal x86 code so you don't need to program for cuda or opencl.

It's for crazy-heavy x86 workloads. No consumer should ever buy one. They're nuts if they do, because it offers no bragging rights - you'd never utilize it.

It's intel's answer to nvidia tesla cards. It's used for computing, but it isn't a great value for the price compared to gpus.

It's a coprocessor , not an actual cpu like an lga xeon.

It's more like a gpu in a sense that you can use it to do heavy workloads that require lots of low power cores .
