New sleeper build

Sleeper build

Hello guys,

here are the first pics from a build I'll be doing for a friend of mine in his old HP media center case.

The build will have

ArRock H97m Annioversary
Core i5 4460
GTX960 reference
8 GB DDR3 HyperX Fury
120GB SSD Kingston HyperX
1 TB Toshibe HDD
Be Quiet Dark Rock cooler
Thermaltake Hamburg 530W 80+ PSU

Total cost - 621 euros.

Had to take the insides apart since it was impossible to work in (forgot to take a picture of that but you can see some of the scrap metal I took out of it.
Also too away one of the two small frotn panels and added a hand-made grid for ventilation, while in the other took away all the useless RGB etc connectors and left only audio and USB (will post pics after I cover the empty holes.

Not going to mod it much more than this (likely) - will post update when components arrive and will assemble.

For some reason I love sleeper builds.

I once had the idea of doing this in an old gateway 2000 case because they are freaking HUGE and you could DL a pretty good water cooling loop in one.

Exactly! always a surprise!

Looks good so far.

I hate that HP and co. put so much useless stuff into their cases.  <_<

Agreed, they put tons of useless crap inside, took me about an hour to take it apart without ripping stuff off...

Tomorrow will post some more pics -decided to paint HP logo and edges of side panel white, let's see how that works out.

A better case to use would be one like those old ass, white cases from the 10+ y/o PCs [emoji4]

Oh man that needs some serious metalwork done on the interior.

I hate fixed drive bays that hog 1/4 of the case >.<

Oh yeah, those are fun to work on! wel, sort of, in the sense that they really make you work for the results, lol

Yeah, they have their flaws, but still some pretty good stuff can be done in them (like the above build) - had done one for my gf in her old case, came out fairly good :)

So here is update two:

Decided to make all the case matte black, so painted over the original plastic as well - it seems to me like it helped "rejuvenate the case", also because it covered all the scratches :D
It was fairly brute of me to leave the glue from the sticker there, but for the life of me I couldn't get it fully off - I'll likely be placing another sticker there anyways, so not a real issue.

After

post-233788-0-73817100-1442732405_thumb.

The I added some white details, such as the HP logo in white and the frame around the grid on the side panel.
I'd say the result is alright - you can see some paint stains, but ill clear those off in the final result 0 for now I'm happy with the tape- and spray- results

Pretty much xD

Unfortunately I think there will be no LEDs in it ( besides my friend other will use the PC (his family) and they dislike LEDs (god knows why)

-snip-

That looks really great.

You made the HP logo that I hate so much look actually pretty good.

I don't understand why HP didn't paint that thing from the beginning on like that. Looks so much more professional.

Btw.: At the front of the case, is there a little cover missing or is that how it is supposed to look like? It looks like HP invented the "ModiVent" system that Fractal is using in their R5

Thanks man!

Yeah, I was wondering that too - the plain black sidepanale looked like something they just glued on there - in white it stands out and actually looks cool :)

About the front - it's supposed to have another cover panel - I pulled it off after taking off the junk metal it had behind and added that hand-made grid, so that there is some front airflow to the thing :)

So I guess I'm using the Fractal "ModiVent" xD

IMO you messed up a bit in the corner of the front panel, where that sticker was. I can still see the gunk leftover :<

Yeah, I know - as I said I did try to wash it off but it wouldn't, and I didn't want to ruin the plastic with chemicals - I'm planning to put a sticker on there anyways, so that should have it covered :)

isopropyl alchohol would most likely have removed it without damaging the plastic. but overall i really like it.

Thanks man! :D if all goes well should get/assemble components by the end of the upcoming week :)

Thanks :) And yeah, I did think of it, but had a previous bad experience where it reacted in a weird way and even after painting there was a spot to be seen... Again, haven't given it too much thought since I'll place a component sticker over that corner :)

That's a pretty amazing case! with allt hat space inside all you'd need to do is just add some grids like I did on this and you'd do just fine on airflow :)

@NicolaZanarini Well seems like quoting people is not working for me but here is a link to my build log of it, I just re-built the system a few weeks ago but like you said doing some mods to it would make a world of difference but I feel not until my mod skills are up to par I can't see myself risking it with this case :)

Nice build mate! If you wanna try but aren't sure about it, I suggest just getting a piece of plastic from the store and try your cutting skills on that - then take the front plastic panel off and see what you can with it - from the looks of it just cutting strips off the "staircase" it has in the front would be good and easy :)

Modding is really not that hard, just have to get comfortablewith the tools :D

Wow good idea yea never thought about that, I was just thinking of paying someone to fully deck it all out and make it all nice while keeping the same look on the outside, can't wait to see what you do with your HP case also :D
