Elliptical selection tool would be best for that, or at least the cleanest anyway,

How did you know that i didn't follow it?

Cleanest Method would be masking it

select magic wand (shift+w)

1 select both sides by pressing Shift and select

2 press mask

3 select the mask (black and white)

4 press ALT+I to reverse it

Try it on for size. Unfortunately some of Earth had to be smoothed out because... computers can't tell where a shadow ends and space begins. Hopefully it's okay, though (doubt it). I'm pretty sure it's transparent.

*braces for berating* I know, it's probably crap... T_T I tried...

you saved it as jpg, which if you know anything about file types, you would know it doesn't have alpha channel, so no jpg doesn't have alpha, it only has RGB values, if you ever want to save it as a transparent, save it as PNG/TIFF , also shadows has nothing to with how magic wand works in the above image. all it needs is the difference between 2 varying pixels.
