Good DAC\Amp combo?

Go to solution Solved by HumbleMobo,

I'm looking for a DAC\amp combo in the 100-200 dollar range that is good.

Get a Schiit Magni 2 and a Schiit Modi 2.  They are both 119$  One's a DAC and the other is an AMP

thx i was think about getting that but i wasn't sure about it

The Schiit ones are heavy duty and as close to prosumer a consumer can get before touching tube amps.  Other than that there's a cheap Fiio EK10 which is a portable USB option

Also i saw the uber version of both magni and the modi and do you know if they're better or if i would just be wasting my money?

They're better but I didn't suggest them because buying both would mean a 300$ DAC/AMP combo

Magni 2 uber "If you need preamp outputs for powered desktop monitors (or for connecting to any power amplifier), or if you want even more power and performance, step up to Magni 2 Uber. With a more sophisticated gain stage and 3x larger power supply, "

 Audio Technica ATH-AD900x

Yeah you won't need an Uber model.  They aren't very hard to drive so this is all you will need.

Pros use solid state gear for just about everything that had to do with listening/mixing/mastering. Tubes introduce too much distortion to make them a worthy investment for that. Tubes at this point are mainly useful for getting a specific sound out of things like guitars, etc.

Thanks for that!  I'm always glad to learn new stuff :D @KaminKevCrew #DoneItAgain

In all honesty though he won't need an uber model, his headphones don't have a relatively high impedance and they aren't like a pair of, for example, Sennheiser Orpheus HD90's ya know?

The Uber model wouldn't drive the Orpheus, on account of it being electrostatic.

Oh, @op, since I didn't go over this earlier: the Magni 2 Uber has a pre out, which means it's an RCA out that you can plug into speakers, but the volume knob on the Magni controls volume. Also, it has a gain switch, and it can output more power than the non-uber.

The modi 2 Uber has more inputs, which might be nice (e.g. Optical for your console and USB for your pc, etc.)

You can also get a tube amp if you want to fit in on head fi
