A Difficult Choice

Mr Fister

in October im going to buy a new GPU for the next 5-7 years (kek)...

i have a difficult way to choose between the GTX 980 Gigabyte G1 for 625$ to the R9 390X Sapphire tri-x for 475$. price range means a lot but also performance.

Thanks guys!

I'd go for the 390X, as that 8GB VRAM will help a lot for the coming years.

R9 390x is very similar to the 980 in performance, so what ever is cheaper I'd go with.

- CPU: Intel i7 3770 - GPU: MSI R9 390 - RAM: 16GB of DDR3 - SSD: Crucial BX100 - HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB -

The 390X is much better for its price so it gets my vote. The 980 is not more than 10-15% faster and it costs $150 more.

R9 390x. I would go for that.

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

It's hard to say for certain, but current data heavily implies that AMDs 300/fury series GPU beats Nvidias 900/titan series GPU in DX12 games. In addition, the 390x has much more ram and it's significantly faster. Again, memory amount and speed may not be important to the degree that the difference between the 980 and the 390x is significant.

What i would do, since you're planing to buy for 5-7 years would be to wait for the next generation Nvidia/AMD. No doubt the next generation cards will have superior DX12 support, and new memory technology makes affordable 16GB cards a reality.

Motherboard: Asus X570-E
CPU: 3900x 4.3GHZ

Memory: G.skill Trident GTZR 3200mhz cl14

GPU: AMD RX 570

SSD1: Corsair MP510 1TB

SSD2: Samsung MX500 500GB

PSU: Corsair AX860i Platinum

R9 390x , if you have other choice I'd go with R9 Fury ( non watercooled version ) :)

i have an HD 5850 and looking forward to upgrade my current rig because next gen will be an entirely new PC purchase :D my current PC just needs an upgrade of a GPU.

PSU is enough BTW?

620w is good enough for either card.

Don't get the 390x. No point, just grab a 390, the difference is minimal after both have been overclocked (just like titan x and 980ti.)

Oc to oc the 980 smacks the shit out of the 390 and 390x even if you get an msi card (which seems to be the only one that can consistently get near 1200 core clock).

As to dx12... Hawaii looks to be a little bit stronger than the 980 at the moment but we will see if that holds as optimizations continue. Fiji however is straight on par with the 980ti at dx12 so that isn't a big deal.

That particular 980 is a bit high, its basically in the 980 ti/Fury X price range by some bucks, when the 980 G1 is around the 510 bucks in Amazon.

Yes, the 980 is faster and will be even faster if you overclock it.

I'll personally wait for the new releases but if you need it now, go for the 390/x.

And use the rest of your budget to buy an ssd.
