I would get a 780 to be honest, GPU Boost 2.0 which would push it a lot further than the 690. As for the 7990 I wouldn't buy one, it is more preferable to have a single GPU graphics card, due to heat output and power consumption.

no, they are hot, expensive and well just not that great. Get either a titan, 780 or 2, or a 7990

Instead of just comparing what would give you better performance, you should see if games you play work well with SLI. The minute you play a game that doesn't like SLI, you're stuck with effectively an underclocked 680. Which would be crushed by a single 780.

I can get it cheaper than the 7990 and 780. I want it to last 2 years with ultra settings. Single screen but might go from 1080 to 1440 p if it becomes cheaper

Get a 780. Period. 780 is as awesome as blueberries.

heat output and power consumption shouldn't  bother you too much as long as you got a beefy psu and a room with good airflow(ha) you should be fine the biggest thing with dual gpu cards is microstuttering and driver issues but a 690 should be fine with nvidias current drivers.  I say go for it, if you are still hesitant maybe ask him to try it out for a little bit if he is your mate.

Also this is how I'd think about it, all demanding AAA games will have support for a 690 no problem but weird indie games or older dx9 titles might not take full advantage of the card, buutttttttt dx9 and indie games will run on anything anyway so I say go for it especially if you want it to last 2 years.  It will outperform the 780 in things where performance is a concern but it may fall behind in minesweeper and madden '02

no, sorry I should of been more specific, he can get a 690 for less than a 7990

I know that's what you were talking about. I didn't catch what he said about that when I posted it originally. Went back and reread what he said! Personally, I still think the 7990 is the better idea since 2GB of VRAM is not future proof whatsoever.
