use crystaldiskmark to benchmark its speed and crystaldiskinfo to see its condition

IOPS if its going to be your OS drive, if not read and write speeds.

rpm,cache, read and write speeds, warranty doesnt really have anything to do with sped but its a good factor :P

I want to buy an HDD for my mother that performs well. Which metrics should I be looking at in order to ensure this?

Hey there BigDay,
 
I'd get a diagnostic tool from the manufacturer and run it on the drive for the most accurate health status. This should give you a pretty good idea of the condition of the drive. In terms of performance, you can run benchmarks of the drive and see what performance it can give you and compare it to its spec sheet numbers to see if it's working at optimal speeds or not. :) 
Do you have any specific drive in mind or any particular usage? This might help us offer you some options.
