its not defined, it just depends on the algorithm if it finds it or not

I recently uploaded a video using nearly 50 different songs

most of the clips are between 5-20 (more of less) seconds and 0 copyright strikes

the first time I uploaded it had one clip that was almost half a minute long and that got detected

so I would make an educated guess that the limit is between 15 and 25 seconds

There is no "hard" limit. YouTube, SoundCloud, and other media sites use algorithms to detect copyrighted audio in the audio tracks of the files we upload. Sometimes the algorithm can detect 5 seconds of a bass riff, and other times I see people get away with uploading DJ remixes containing full tracks without detection.

As far as I can infer, the US Copyright Act allows for certain exceptions under Section 107: Fair Use, but you basically have to prove that you're not infringing on another's rights, which entails hiring a lawyer and going to court... so the little guys, like DJ's, remix artists, and youtubers, usually never have the resources to even prove their fair usage of another's works in the first place.

§ 107 . Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair useNotwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include— (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

If the song has been modified even just a little it can fool the algorithm

like changing part of the bass or even dropping the song by half a tone (extremely difficult to hear but fools the matching algorithm)

also if a small artist does not have his songs copyrighted by one of these companies that work with youtube to find reposts you can post their music and it will not get striked unless the artist himself finds it and reports it

Exactly! It's quite amusing actually to simply drop the bass down when I do DJ mixes and see it not pickup the copyright.

On a related topic, Cinavia's audio watermarking system is another one of the supposed best in DRM for movies, yet this happened -> https://torrentfreak.com/dvd-ranger-cracks-unbeatable-cinavia-anti-piracy-system-140524/

That doesn't work for more than a few seconds, which makes it useless to do that.
