i have a chance to get two GTX 680's for about 400$, would both of these cards be about the equivalent of a 980? or i need them to be able to run 3 1080p 144hz monitors

680s only have 2GB of VRAM. They will hold you back in today's titles.

However thermals are a big thing, the 980 is updated so I'd say go with that

VRAM doesn't "add up" when you SLI cards.

For 400$ you can get a Radeon R9 390X, should serve you well.

even in sli you only get 2gb

You still must factor in the issues with SLI, including the potential for games which are not compatible with SLI or perform poorly with it enabled - that would cause you to use one card drastically reducing performance.

Grab an R9 390.

What's the other computer for?

gaming and internet browsing. it will not be playing any demanding games. it would only be playing minecraft and need for speed and lesser games than that. it is only my back up computer at the moment. it only has a ddr2 motherboard and i will not be upgrading it until i finish the computer set up i am working on now

i would be upgrading the motherboard and everything else eventually. even if i do get both GPU's i could just use one in the computer and use the other one in the rig i am useing now until i get the 980
