Leaving laptop on soft surface overnight

Hi,

It really annoys me when a certain member of my family always leaves their laptop on a soft surface overnight playing youtibe. They do it everynight and i won't shut it down because they will have a moan at me. I find their disrespect and disregard for tech so annoying, how can i teach them a lesson to make sure they stop doing it bc they don't care.

Remote control the thing, when they are using it...put the volume up and put the midget porn on?

Its been running lime that for a year already and doesn't show any sign of giving up. Its a first gen i5 so its a heat box

I put my netbook on my bed.

It isn't blocking any vents, and doesn't get hot.

As long as there do good things, it shouldn't die.

I don't understand, what disturbs you is the fact they leave youtube playing all night (for what purpose? are they watching in their sleep?), or the fact they do it on a soft surface?

Wait for it to die and refuse to fix it for them. "I told you so"

That is what I have done several times. When they realise they need to fork out for another, it is a fairly effective lesson.

I managed to get them to use a cooling pad for a little but they gave up. It is their ignorance but watching a laptop get stressed frustrates me when it could be put to better use

It's not the cpu that dies. Most of the time it's the Northbridge which loses solder contact with the chip.

Change the power option so it goes to sleep after 2 hours.

Hide the desktop icons and start button, change the wallpaper to something that has a overheating warning of some kind.

That will teach them.

Wont youtube stop it from sleeping anyway? Heck its turned off by the morning sometimes because it shut off to prevent heat damage at the max cpu temp of 105c. I should just run it hot and ask them to put there finger on the heatpipe

Yes well macbooks run hot by design anyway so you're not making a difference to it. Its tge morning now and the laptop went to sleep after 8hours of youtube on the bet. Im gonna change it to 2 hours [emoji14]

Its the new macbook with a 5w CPU. not exactly in a major threat

Yea true, it will probs still get a little warm by design of not using fans in the macbook. Not as bad as the 1st gen i5 in this laptop. Its a cooking element
