Hey all! So I have a weird question! I bought an msi r9 290x for $250 shortly after the whole 3.5gb debacle from Nvidia. I've been using it for about 8 months and I'm not the biggest fan of it. Even with the cooler still runs pretty hot and loud. I don't plan on getting into 1440p/1080p 144hz anytime in the near future because I am transferring to a 4 year uni from my community college in about 6 months or so. I mainly play league, dota, csgo, with a few AAA games here and there. Should I just sell it and get a r9 380/gtx 960? I know it is an odd question!

950/960 depending on how much $$$ you willing to drop

I'd drop the whole $250 or so on a good gtx 960. Only reason I got a new gpu was my because my cat knocked a glass of water off my desk and ruined my gtx 660. He was a hero my gtx 660. Saved my whole rig that day! Q_Q

I would go for a 380 over a 960. better performance per dollar, and AMD cards look promising for DX12.

Another quick question. Could high gpu temps cause an increase in cpu temps?

What are the temps like? That is my only concern, especially because I will be moving into a dorm room.

If it isn't a rear exhausting 'reference' card, yes it dumps all the cards heat in to the case.

I presume you can you under-clock 290xs? If so, it may solve your issues with it for the reasonable sum of $0

Absolutely. Since the gpu warms the air within the case and the cpu cooler feeds on that air, the cpu temps are going to be higher. But, usually, it does not really matter since its pretty insignificant

-snip-

Why don't you stick with your card. You can do undervolting and vsync or a frame limiting tool. Result willbe quieter cooler becasue less load and less voltage-->less wattage--->lower temps. Downgrading is likeburning money!

Depending on the model the temps on th 960 can be really low. The380 willbe cooler than your 290 due to similar fan designs betwenn 290/280 380/390 respectively...

If temps and noise are of concern, get maxwell. No point in getting a rebrand that makes just as much noise...

You don't turn a card like a 290X into an efficient card with vsync and some undervolting.

Undervolting is the first thing you should to. Downclocking should you be your last resort!!

I could give that a try but I'm not really losing anything. I used the mail-in rebate so I am just trading it basically. :P And after using AMD I'm not a huge fan of them. Nothing wrong with the drivers or performance just heat and sound. I should mention I live in Florida and it gets hot as hell down here almost year round and with a card that gets really hot it isn't too pleasant.

I'm shocked no one called me a dumby for wanting to do this! Also thanks for no one fan-boying about either brand. I was worried about that too!

Edit: After looking at review, temps, etc. I think I'll go with the r9 380 strix. Runs quite and cooler than my r9 290x. :D

It is totally reasonable. The 290s can get really noise at times... I will have a look at the 380 ang give you my ipinion if you don't mind ... just a sec brb.

No prob! The sound is half of the r9 290x and the temps are half. I'll prob just get the 2gb since the fps difference is marginal.

Well if your concerned with noise the Palit GTX 960 Jestream would be even quieter than the Asus 380 Strix

You won't notice an FPS difference betweeen the 2 and 4 GB. The difference is you can pack larger/more textures into 4GB. When you overload 2GB your FPS will go down to nothing though. How much of a price difference do you have at your prefered store?
