So, I have a weird question for everyone.

My uncle is big into computers. Specifically anything to do with Linux. He despises Windows and Mac. He's disabled due to a back injury from working in construction and doing logging work. He medically is incapable of working. He's also something of a loner, a bit anti-social. The biggest problem though, is that he can't afford any kind of internet connection.

Recently, I gave him all of the components from my first PC build, which are as follows:

AMD FM2 A10-5700 APU (with an ASUS FM2 ATX motherboard)

GTX 660 GPU (yeah I know, AMD APU and Nvidia GPU makes no sense, I was a noob)

EVGA 500w PSU

AZZA Genesis 9000 case.

I don't know what kind of memory he is using, or how much he has. Although I plan on getting him at least 8's of DDR3 for christmas.

So I'm wondering, just for my own curiosity, as well as things I might be able to recommend to him, what he can do with this setup? He doesn't play games, like, at all. He does occasionally have internet access when he comes to our house or someone elses house or going to the public library, so he can download things and save them to a thumb drive or USB HDD. He's kind of in a bad place because of being disabled and not having a wife or a girlfriend, or friends really, so I just want to kind of help him out in any way I can.

Any thoughts?

Get him some books on programming and let him loose?

I hadn't thought of that. The problem is that I don't know what he already knows, so I wouldn't know what to buy. He has already "built" his own OS based off of....something, I think either Debian or Fedora.

I wish I had the money to get him an internet connection at his house.

Maybe buy him an internet USB dongle and prepay 10GB or something instead of the 8GB of RAM.

I think he might already be planning on getting one. Not 100% sure.

He's kind of hard to read. If you guys think me or the actual character of Dale Gribble are weird, you haven't met my uncle. Even weirder is that he looks EXACTLY like Johnny Depp's character in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

If he hasn't got a good linux distro, get him Elementary OS. It's basically Ubuntu with a mac-esque look and feel.

Edit: just saw above post

Edit 2 after the like: The Nvidia GPU is a bit overkill for linux imo since there's already an apu

Like I said, he's kind of hard to read. He would basically avoid the question because he doesn't like asking for help. It took us forever to get him to apply for actual disability.

Thought: cheap 3d printer with supplies for it?

I think he'd have fun with a 3D printer.

Probably, he's a huge gun nut as well. (he's got a national match grade M-14. Super jealous of that).

I definitely want to get him something to mess with for christmas, but for this thread I was thinking more of some software or something he could mess around with, I'm just not sure what.

Oh you and me both. I've shot it....and goddamn is that thing sexy as all hell. If ever there was a rifle that's "too accurate", it'd be that one.

Yeah, do what AlwaysFSX said and get him a programming book. I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

I would, but what kind of programming that he'd be able to do?

He downloads videos whenever he comes over. I don't blame him. I'd probably end up on the news for going on a rampage if I didn't have internet access.
