Replacing it will not give more then a 2 degree difference

Probably bad airflow, its a compact case so probably. but it used to run at like 70 degrees celsius in the same spot it has always been.

Clean up the dust, get new case-fans or even get a new case. Replacing the thermal paste will make NO difference at all, linus made a video about it.

Dropped 6c on my Classified 980 and G1 Gaming GTX 970 by using Thermal Grizzly on the gpu core.

 

Thermal grizzly is the best thermal paste out hands down.

Use Arctic MX-4 and make sure you put a bit more than you would on a CPU since a GPU doesn't have a heat spreader.

Remember that maxwell voltage scaling is complete ass, dropping 6c gave me 25 more mhz on the core in Firestrike, put me from 50th on stock cooling to 12th on hwbot.

Alright so I figured out it was the retarded auto fan control that was letting my gpu hit 90 degrees celsius. It only was using 40% fan speed. Idk why but i fixed it.
