It is better than both - yes. The 7970 is the 280x which is quite a bit more powerful than the 270x(7870) and a bit more than the 380

7970 is definitely better than R9 270x (which is 7870).

In some games 7970 is better than R9 380 in some the R9 380 is better (R9 380 handles tesselation a bit better).

You can tell him the 7970 and R9 280X use the same graphics chip (so pretty much the same GPU) which is better than the R9 270X and a tiny bit better than the R9 380.

So it all depends on the game? It's interesting to see how a 3 and a half year old card is still so good even to this day.

Yea it comes down to a game you play.

Basicaly games that run a lot of tesselation will be better with R9 380 by about 3-5FPS in other games the 7970 will take a slight lead. I would say they are prety much head to head except that 7970 has 3GB VRAM and R9 380 comes with 2GB or 4GB (which is more expensive).

Yeah , but let's say they're the same price, which one would you buy ?

R9 380 because it has full Free Sync support and it tends to OC higher.

It is better than a 270x and will perform similarity to a r9 380 if not a little better.
