EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti K|NGP|N

Spookydoge

Why the fuck does it cost so much xD. Is there anything that can justify that pricetag? I mean it's core clock is not the highest, the only special things about it is that it has a 14 + 3 power phase and that it needs an additional 6 pin cable upon the standard 8 + 8, (8+8+6).

it depends on its asic quality

lower asic quality means it can handle more voltages

higher means less voltage for the same performance and it runs cooler

so higher asic cards will run cooler at the same performance range

It is hands down the best 980 TI on the market, no competition at all if you want the absolute best performance.

No other 980 TI has Samsung memory, or a BIOS that makes it compete with a Titan X clock for clock.

It's absolutely smashing everyone on benchmark charts on Ln2 and even water&air, hitting clock speeds above 2100 mhz on the core while still having very high memory clocks, something other 980 ti's struggle to do.

No idea what you're talking about here. All 980 Ti's compete with the Titan X clock for clock in the same way.

Results show otherwise.

Samsung memory performs better at the same speeds from what I've seen. I believe the timings of the memory are tighter providing better scores in games & more performance in games.

Seeing as the KP is the ONLY 980 ti with Samsung, it performs better at the same exact clocks.

You're making it seem like there's magic going on here. It's not magic. From a hardware perspective, any 980 Ti will compete with the Titan X in the exact same way clock for clock. I am not talking about overclocking - that's not clock for clock. What allows the 980 Ti to beat the Titan X is the higher clocks overcoming the disabled hardware.

Read my post again, I edited it to provide more information.

Also, this is not the first time BIOS have been made for the KP cards that provided better scores at the same clock speeds.

There's an extreme OC bios made by kingpin for the 980 Classified that provides higher scores at the SAME clock speeds that loads of people have validated to work on OCN and KPC forums.

I'm not convinced unless the BIOS is getting past some sort of limitation put on by the traditional 980 Ti BIOSes.

You can see clearly the results speak for themselves, when the cards are compared at 1430/3505, the 980 TI KPE is getting HIGHER scores than the 980 TI reference at 1430/3505.

It's not like 3DMark can't be tricked. Besides, did they test with actual games?

It can't, it will throw up flags for invalid results.

This is why HWBOT allows 3dmark submissions to be used on any OS, and other benchmarks cannot.  Because it has anti cheat methods built in, so people cannot cheat.

And you're sure they're not just unlocking hardware? There is no way that a simple BIOS update would increase the score like that unless current BIOSes are holding it back - did they explain what makes theirs so special?

On top of that, the screenshots provided in the KP forum doesn't even show 3DMark being finished with score validation. Claims they're not connected to the Internet.

When you boot w/ these BIOS enabled, it has a screen that pops up before the splash screen that says things about GM2XX BIOS for engineering purposes only, so I assume that the BIOS is indeed doing something to the card to unlock things, or to tighten memory timings further.

I do know it unlocks the power limit completely, and prevents you from having to do things like hardmods to the GPU to get more power out of it.  Things like in this tutorial here:

http://kingpincooling.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2539

By using these "XOC BIOS" (that's what he calls them) you don't have to make these modifications to the GPU to get the full potential out of it.

They are probably unlocking the disabled hardware on the GM200 GPU.

Yet another thing that makes the KP 980 TI the best 980 TI in terms of pure performance as I said before :P

Just be aware there is no magic going on here. Someone claimed on the Kingpin forum that the BIOS is efficient - it isn't. It's simply unlocking hardware on the GPU. There is no way a simple BIOS flash could improve the score by that much. The IPC between the 980 Ti and Titan X is the same given the same amount of hardware as they are both running GM200.

I am not trying to say that the KP is worth the money, because for 99% of the people on this forum it isn't.

However, if you plan on pushing your GPU to it's absolute limits and want the BEST performance possible, the KP can't be beaten.

If you're the type of person not scared of pushing 1.4v+ through your GPU, the KP is for you, if you're scared of adding +87mv, nope. :P

It's not magic. It's physics. It's no different than flashing a 7950 into a 7970, except in this case, they're claiming it's still a 980 Ti. It isn't.

Last I checked the HOF LN2 edition doesn't hold ANY records now for the 980ti KPE kicked it right of the throne.

Its not so much magic, its the memory even for both cards you can have exact same memory speed on both a Titan X and a 980ti KPE on a stock BIOS, and the KPE will scale better cause of the memory being used on it. Its alot more then just simple physics. GM200 for the 980ti has failed/disabled cores that I am sure that even with an engineering BIOS will not even re enable them. Last I knew the Engineering BIOS really helps out with voltage control and the TDP  that EVGA is FORCED by Nvidia to have on the card cause of the Greenlight Program.
