Do you guys use Vsync? Do you find it helps make games more playable?

 

I've been experimenting with it on different games. Most of them I can get to run at high and maintain a 60 FPS. I do however find its not that useful in some games, like Total War, where having an unlocked frame-rate is kind of necessary for me, and tearing is not really a concern.

 

Do you guys make the trade off between quality of picture and performance? I have a 144hz monitor, but most games I have to play on low settings to get them to have a high enough frame rate to match the 144hz refresh rate. Even if the extra responsiveness is nice when playing a little more competitively.

 

Battlefield 4 and Hardline are good examples, where I use Vsync at 60 hz to maintain constant 60 FPS without drops.

 

Ive also noticed that some games like Call of Duty don't go past 90 fps.

I always take it even with performance/quality, I'm sure if I had a 144Hz monitor I would care more about having 144FPS, I dont really have Vsync on. ever because I know for a fact your monitor can refresh faster then it says, ex) I can run Minecraft (1.7) at 1,300FPS and when it dips down into 1,000 I can tell that its lagging, Not screen tearing, but actual lag

I only use it if I get significant tearing. and even then only if I can still run it at 60. Otherwise I just cap my frames at 70 and leave it. (10 frame buffer for lag spikes over my 60 Hz monitor)

I use it only If I can ran the game at 70+FPS. Tearing gets bad and it makes it look very nice. Example GTA V looks way  better with Vsync if you can run it without getting lag from it on

I just bump my settings high enough to get 50 fps or just get them lower so I get 70 and use it.

I use vsync pretty much across the board. I cannot stand even the slightest hint of tearing, and I've never personally experienced any of the input lag everyone's always talking about.

 

Yeah I mostly have it on, especially for any single player games

 

for fast paced FPS online I normally turn it off but those games generally do not suffer tearing much

do you play any aim intensive games like csgo? I notice it right away but not som much on bf4

 

A fair point, and no, I do not play CS:GO. I'm an on/off Battlefield fan, though I think it has been months since I last played it.

 

Question: if you're playing CS:GO with an uncapped framerate on a 60 Hz monitor, wouldn't a random tear when you're trying to aim be far, far worse than whatever input lag Vsync imposes? It seems possible—if that happens at the moment you need to fire—that you could be looking at two frames without knowing which one accurately represents the opponent's position.

This is a good point. Input lag aside, Vsync must help in situations, especially in Battlefield and other non-competitive first person shooters. I have noticed that at 144hz with 144-150 fps with Vsync on in Hardline and BF4 that I am much more effective, than running with higher graphics at 60 hz.

I use it in BF3 with my AMD PC as it stutters like a cunt...

 

Zero input lag at all as i cap the game engine to 59FPS and i use a 1000hz polling mouse so input latency is very low.
