So today I accidentally formatted my hardrive, but no fear I have a backup hardrive . So I re installed windows 8 and everything, so how do I get all my files back ect from my drive. I want my pc to be exactly like it was before the format. Please help I am in major need of assistance and I am ready to loose it, thanks guys.

it will just use the backup and put what ever you had. Backups don't essiantaly save your desktop layout or settings.

Copy the files back and make the programs you want to use target the original drive.

A backup won't carry over settings, at least most of the time. A formatted drive is easy to recover as long as nothing was written over the old data, but since you installed Win8 over it I find it very unlikely that you will be able to get the files back. Only right after you format a drive can the files be recovered. Linus has a video about it here: 

 

As for using the backup just copy the files over. Not likely that you will be able to get your settings back.

How did you back up the files? Did a utility just copy the files directly and they remain in their original form?

If you have backups from /users/documents and users/appdata, then you can have most settings back. But there are software that only save those to install folder.
