a challenge for video gurus :D

mr moose

O.K, I do sound and technical for a local band.  They are are quite lively on stage and have been trying to improve their stage presence with lighting, dueling, small interludes etc. I have been thinking about making it a little bigger by placing 8 or so 19" monitors over the stage (facing in slightly different directions and broadcasting video footage of the band as they play and of various black and white videos or snippets.  I was thinking an overhead of the drummer on one, guitar on another lead singer on another and the rest changing between the band and movie snippets.

The issue I have is that I want to place a video camera pointing down the neck of each guitar (Ala Angus Young, thunderstruck), so they have to be light, battery operated and send the signal back to my desk wirelessly.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Moose

Oh boy... I know what you want but I need to ask first, how long do the band play at each performance. Wireless video cameras eat up batteries fast.

I am not sure what to suggest here, so try contacting the AV department at B&H, explain to them what you need and they may advise you on what products you can get. I have a feeling it will be expensive.

My thoughts are you will need to get something like a lipstick camera and connect it to a wireless video transmitter that can also provide power to the camera. You won't find a compact package with everything built into a single piece, so the transmitter and battery may need to be clipped to the musician's belt.

They do 3x 1 hour sets.  so I can change batteries when they have a breather.  The thing is becasue they will be attached to the end of guitars they wil need to be light.  I can suffer 30 min of use per battery if that's the trade of for size.

The thing is even small lipstick cameras will not have batteries and wireless transmitters built in, you will need to connect the camera to a small brick that is clipped off somewhere.

A lipstick camera is light weight, you can mount it to the neck of a guitar by a mounting clip. And string the connection cable to the transmitter and power pack. A good lipstick camera costs around $300, wireless transmitters a bit more.

Yeah that sounds out of my price range and certainly not suitable for the guitarists.

Cheers anyway. :)

Go consult with some AV specialists or forums. I'm sure they can help.

Have you considered renting gear?
