Hi, after I finished installing my new CPU and Mobo I found that my Windows Key that I bought at the store wasn't working anymore. I don't think this is normal, it ways: This key didn't work please check it and try again but this is the good key, I know it by heart because I entered it many times for reformats.

Since it's a retail key, stick your old hardware in and deactivate it

I sold the old board :(

If I bought it, does it give me the right to pirate it?

If you bought it, its not pirating. If it's OEM, what the others suggested may work too. OEM versions are usually tied to the pc they were in. So you may be able to deactivate it like the others have said, and then install it to your pc with the new parts.

It's been 15 years since I used an OEM version. Retail can be transfered over, but you may need to call ms support for their help.

It's always a good day if you woke up breathing.

My windows 10 OS is literally the first genuine OS I have used. I bought $3,000 worth of computers for 600 bucks and they both had SSDs with windows 7 on them. Needless to say, one of them is my new rig, and I just upgraded the OS. I know it is genuine because I was part of the IT crew that installed it.

Not sure if it's OEM or not, it's in a cardboard folder and there is things written in there like "stick this code on a computer"...

Yeah I'd much rather pay the extra for retail. You also get ms support with it. If you have OEM you get stuck paying a bill for their support. Nope, not going to happen, they already get enough of my money. ;-)

Did you buy it from a store or online? Your best bet is to call ms and see what they say. Imho.

when it comes to oem keys that used to be the case but from what i have read windows 10 dosent quite work that way. i suggest you call microsoft as i think they actually know they key for the system if its been used on a pc that you used with your email address and they will tell you the actuall key you need to enter. i also found out that all home keys are the same and all pro keys are the same when displayed but are not the activation key:/
