My thoughts on the GTX 970, please give your input

yoshiii

Hello

So Ive thought about it and thought about it.

Weither or not to buy the GTX970.

Ive decided not to, reasons are why:

I will need a better video card than what I have now for Graphic Design, 3D design, rendering and movie editing.

I am buying a 1440p monitor. I will game some.

The GTX 970 might be a good value card, but it is not what I need.

The GTX 980 might not be in a good price bracket, but its what I need.  The GTX 980ti would be better but cant get at this time.

So as with the decision I made with the FX 8350 vs the i7 4790k, the FX 8350 would get the job done with 3D design, rendering and movie making, but it would have its weaknesses when it came to gaming and some other things.  Good value for the money but it wasnt what I needed.

I decided to go with the i7 4790k because it does what I need for it to do well.  I had to spend a bit more money but it is a good cpu.

The GTX970, a good value card but it would not be the best for what I want for a gpu.  I feel its better to spend a little more for the GTX980 because it makes a difference in the things I need it to do compared to the GTX 970.

Thoughts?

Good call on going with the i7 4790K, it will destroy the FX 8350.

Imo go with either a 980 or 980ti instead of a 970 for 1440p.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

well you can overclock the 970 and get close to 980 reference performance. But for 1440p get the 980 if you have the money

have you considered the r9 390? The Vram could help in 3D design (im not sure what programs you're using) but also AMD cards are always much higher in compute performance than Nvidia's consumer cards.  It also is priced between the 970/980 and performs as such

Great job on choosing the i7 over the 8350. It wasn't even debatable.

Getting on to the 970, it is a pretty mid end card. It might be good compared to the 980 interms of price/performance, however if you really need the power then the 980 is the way to go. You probably wont need a 980Ti as that card is up there with the Titan X, however a 980 will be the best option you can have if you have the budget for it.

I think so, I need more Cuda cores so that's one reason why I am going with the GTX980

One word.

Cuda.

(It will help with rendering and such more than opencl will depending on software used, if they're using adobe products then it will definitely help more.)

yeah that's why I said that im not sure what programs he is using.  Some don't really benefit from that and AMD is a better choice on the money side

id get a 390, 2x the vram.

390 > 970 @ 1440p and above for pure gaming performance. If you want best performance per watt then 970 > 390.

Why not a R9 390X or R9 290X on the cheap? If I remember right, they're both cheaper than the 980 is, both in the performance bracket, both good with OpenCL rendering (for your professional work) and the 390X has 8GB of vRAM deliciously.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

That's interesting to know.

My 3D software use Cuda but I understand more about Premiere now.

So far in my experiance the amd cards simply work better for productivity (with recent softwres versions).

CUDA used to be king, now..i cant say that for certain.

Anyhow good luck!

Getting on to the 970, it is a pretty mid end card.

Considering the overclocking headroom of most 970s I really have a hard time calling it a mid end card. You could make an argument for upper mid but I considering it high end especially since most gamers only go for this tier card and not 980+ because of pricing.

First build every: Intel Core i7 4790K, Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1 motherboard, Kingston HyperX FURY 1866 2x8 16GB Kit, Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970 G1 Gaming, Corsair Obsidian 450D Black ATX Mid Tower, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB & 3TB Toshiba HDD, EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2, Corsair H100i GTX 240mm, Gigabyte Bluetooth 4.0/Wifi Card, Logitech G700S. Running on Windows 10

Surface Pro 3: i5 4300U with 8GB of ram and 256GB SSD. Running Windows 10 Pro

Yeap I'd vote for the 980...

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

980ti's are enthusiast cards. As are Titans. Not that many people get them. That leaves 970s high tier and 980s straddling the line.

Some people seem to forget most people play at 1080p and not 1440p and up. People don't need that powerful graphics cards.
