Hi guys

my friend is wanting to build a Desktop PC so he came to me for advice. I have recommended him a particular website which has prebuilt gaming systems. Let me just say I am in new Zealand so there is a limited amount of options. this particular rig contains only the core of the PC, i.e no monitor no OS etc. it is $2279 and I think it is very nice for the price. it comes with:

i7 - 4790

GTX 980

16Gb ram

2TB HDD (no SSD)

but it comes with a motherboard which is quite cheap = AsRock H81 Mini-ITX Motherboard.

im wondering before I tell him its a good deal, will this motherboard impact his gaming performance? he wants to play the latest games at 1080p 60fps+ he has been looking at youtube vids a lot and he loves the performance of the GTX 980.

so what is bad about the motherboard since its so cheap? if im correct, a motherboard only serves as basically as the unit which links everything together.

any help on this is greatly appreciated. provided is a link to the Build. please give your opinions on the Rig :)

Well I was going to say build it yourself since it will be way cheaper, but apparently New Zealand is incredibly expensive.

-Snip-

Does he NEED the i7? What are the uses of his system?

The motherboard is actually fine. It just looks cheap cause it's Mini-ITX. Of course, H97 chipset would be way better IMO.

Operating system not included, keep that in mind.

Also, keep in mind that NZ doesn't pay in USD (NZ --> USD) (Excuse the Dutch)

he will be using it for gaming mostly but he will also be using it for things like video rendering etc.

I used the same site to build the rig individually and I saved about $100 without monitor OS etc.

thanks for all the replies so far. would it be better if I told him to just buy each individual part and then get them to build it? (hes no good at that stuff)

I suggest you tell him to build it himself, it is not very difficult now that you have, literally, hundreds of tutorials online of how to build a successful PC. You do not really need any experience, because of that. You would save money, but $100 isn't much, it's your/his choice.

It's basically like building a lego with less pieces, except there are thousands of people helping you on youtube and such.

Also, about your specs; maybe you want a 120 gb SSD OS drive.

did good on changing to the i5 though if it's just for gaming and not heavy video editing!

Maybe you should also get a monitor with a lower refresh rate too, such as a benq. Also, I should note that the i5-4960K is NOT compatible with DDR4 memory. He should be good with a 1600MHz DDR3 memory
