Buy GTX 980 or keep R9 290

wako7654

Hi LTT,

I currently have a R9 290  which is not really a good clocker(had to underclock it at times just to stabilize it on some games), I've had it for 1year and 5 months now. I have money for gtx 980 now but mostly i just play WoW and record. The R9 290 seems to have a bit of performance hit when recording and i can't seem to max out my 144 Hz monitor @ 1080p at times. Is it worth an upgrade or? (thinking of xfire but it does not seem to scale well. Mostly im leaning on 980 because NVidia seems to be better at wow and low power consumption

Also how does XFire consume power on idle? Its like 1 card idle x 2 or something right?

I would go 980. And Crossfire on idle isn't anything absurd but you're using a fair bit more power using dual 290s rather than one 980 which will likely be a better overclocked than your darn 290 :/

The 980 TI has much more price/performance.

I recommend you sell your 290 and use that money towards getting a 980 TI.

Get a 980(ti), you'll get way better performance and less power consumption.

i7 6700k - 32GB DDR4-2133 - GTX 980

I get like 30fps increase vs 60~ish on 980, should i still go xfire or? How about power?

Edit: Oh wait thats a 290, But i guess its a bit relative?

Since you mostly play WoW and need ShadowPlay, grab a 970 instead. It's is much cheaper than 980 (at least in my country), and only slightly slower. Multi-GPU scaling usually crap in MMO games because of the CPU bottleneck so probably best to avoid that.
